Packers Will Not Be Contenders When Micah Parsons Returns

The Green Bay Packers had an abysmal 39-22 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 1 of the 2026 season. 

Green Bay entered the season as one of the favorites in the NFC, but they proved against the Vikings that they aren't close to competing with the top teams. 

The Packers' offensive line is the main reason they lost the game and why they won't be a contender in the 2026 season. Quarterback Jordan Love was constantly under pressure, as he was sacked four times and hit 15 times.

That is unacceptable if Green Bay is going to have any chance of winning a game this season. Brian Flores and Minnesota's defense attacked the Packers' offensive line, blitzing on almost every down as they knew they couldn't keep Love upright.

When Love had a sliver of time in the pocket, he was effective, as he completed 21 of 42 passes for 387 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception. The weapons also showed their potential as Christian Watson hauled in six receptions for 147 yards and two touchdowns. 

2025 first-round pick Matthew Golden had an impact in his first game in a bigger role, finishing with six receptions for 95 yards.

The tight ends also played well as Tucker Kraft had three receptions for 65 yards while Jonnu Smith had two receptions for 50 yards. 

The weapons were getting open for Love, but it won't matter if the Packers' offensive line can't consistently protect him in the pocket. 

Green Bay's run game, which had plenty of question marks heading into the season with Josh Jacobs out, didn't do much, as they rushed for 66 yards on 21 carries. MarShawn Lloyd led the backfield with 37 yards on 13 carries, while Chris Brooks had 29 yards on seven carries.

It's hard to blame the running backs as the offensive line didn't create holes for the offense, with the Vikings posting seven tackles for loss.

The starting offensive line for Green Bay was Jordan Morgan, Donovan Jennings, Sean Rhyan, Jacob Monk, and Zach Bako-Bewele. While Aaron Banks will step in at left guard upon his return, it likely won't completely transform the unit.

Head coach Matt LaFleur will need to try out different combinations on the offensive line, and general manager Brian Gutekunst must explore adding veteran offensive linemen like free agent Kevin Zeitler to improve protection for Love.

The Packers were expected to be a contender to win the Super Bowl, particularly when superstar pass rusher Micah Parsons returns to the field. Parsons had a phenomenal impact in his first season in Green Bay, recording 41 total tackles, 12 tackles for loss, and 12.5 sacks. 

He is one of the best defensive players in the league, but if Green Bay's offense can't keep Love on his feet, Parsons' impact won't be enough.

If the offensive line problems persist, the Packers won't be a contender in the 2026 season despite spending a lot of money on their roster and expecting to be a Super Bowl-caliber team.
