Bryce Young and John Metchie were teammates in college. Now, they are teammates in the NFL.
Carolina Panthers QB Bryce Young already has great chemistry with new WR John Metchie.
Why? Because the two were teammates in college at Alabama.
"It's almost like a spiritual experience," Metchie said, via Panthers.com. "We know how to adjust for each other. If it's something where I might be struggling, he knows how to adjust to put it where only I can get it. If he's struggling and the pocket is collapsing, I know how to move to make it easier for him."
Metchie appeared in nine games with the New York Jets and Philadelphia Eagles last season. He put up 29 receptions for 256 yards and two touchdowns.
The 25-year-old Metchie was the 44th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. He has played for the Houston Texans, Jets and Eagles. Metchie enters next season with 73 receptions for 686 yards and three touchdowns.
"(He's) doing a great job with the little details, and a lot of the time that's the stuff," said Young. "A good smart player will come in, and he'll run the right route, but is it the right landmark, right timing, or the splits the right way? And he's been doing a great job of studying to make sure that's possible, taking it out to the field. He worked super hard."
Young has 8,291 passing yards, 49 passing touchdowns, 30 interceptions, 718 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns in a Carolina uniform. He put up 3,011 passing yards, 23 passing touchdowns, 11 interceptions, 216 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns last season.
The Panthers did pick up the fifth-year option on Young's contract, but unless the QB wins a Super Bowl with Carolina, the Panthers will always be criticized for giving up too much for Young, who is only 14-30-0 in the NFL.
Most NFL insiders don't expect the Panthers to sign Young to an extension this offseason since the QB has been too inconsistent. Young has to play well again next season to earn an extension.
Young is set to make $12.1 million next season in the fourth year of his rookie deal. His fifth-year option is worth a guaranteed $25.9 million.
