With the 2025-26 NFL season finally in the books, the Carolina Panthers and general manager Dan Morgan will have an important offseason ahead of them.
While the 2026 NFL Draft continues to be a hot topic amongst the fanbase, the Panthers could make a huge splash before the big day to fill a massive hole on the offense prior to the 2026 NFL season.
NFL writer Bill Barnwell recently wrote about some of the possible trades that could occur this offseason, claiming that the Panthers and the Indianapolis Colts could strike a deal that includes wideout Xavier Legette for 2020 second-round pick Michael Pittman Jr. and a late-round pick swap.
“In return, the Colts would land a Day 3 pick and Legette, who is due just $4.4 million combined over the next two seasons,” Barnwell wrote. “If Indianapolis needs to spend money elsewhere, Legette would make sense slotting in as a third or fourth wide receiver behind Pierce, Josh Downs and potentially Ashton Dulin. Ballard has loved drafting high-end athletes at receiver during his time in Indianapolis, and Legette certainly qualifies. Having just turned 25, Legette still might have some room for growth. And if he fails to get there, it at least wouldn't cost the Colts much.”
Thomas Shea-Imagn ImagesAfter being selected in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, Legette has failed to reach the high expectations set upon himself throughout his first two seasons. Throughout his time with the organization, the former South Carolina standout has recorded 860 receiving yards and seven touchdowns on 84 receptions.
This prompted Morgan to take another wide receiver in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft in Tetairoa McMillan, who was recently named the 2025 AP Offensive Rookie of the Year. And with Legette struggling to find his role on offense, it’s clear that the 25-year-old could use a fresh start.
In return, the Panthers would land an experienced wideout in Pittman to pair with McMillan and 2024 UDFA Jalen Coker. Pittman’s NFL career has been full of ups and downs, as he’s reached the 1,000 receiving yard mark twice in his career. However, with the recent emergence of wideout Alec Pierce, the 28-year-old pass catcher’s role within the Colts offense has slowly diminished over the past two seasons.
If Indianapolis wants to consider resigning Pierce this offseason, the Colts will likely have to part ways with Pittman. Luckily for Carolina, Pittman would be an excellent fit for a team that has a young wide receiver corps. His veteran experience would give head coach Dave Canales more flexibility on offense, which is something the team lack with Legette.
