The Carolina Panthers add to their defense in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft with Texas Tech defensive tackle Lee Hunter.

The Carolina Panthers, after an exciting first night of the 2026 NFL Draft, have continued their dominant stretch into day two by selecting Texas Tech defensive tackle Lee Hunter with the No. 49 pick.

While the Panthers stood at the No. 51 pick in the second round, general manager Dan Morgan did not waste any time to land his guy, as Carolina traded the No. 51 and 159 picks to the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for picks No. 49 and 196.

This paved the way for the organization to select Hunter, who could be an excellent defensive tackle to pair with veteran Derrick Brown in 2026 and beyond.

How Hunter Fits With Panthers

After spending his first three seasons in college with the UCF Knights, Hunter entered the transfer portal and landed with the Texas Tech Red Raiders for the 2025 season. During his final year at the college level, the stout lineman recorded a total of 41 tackles, 10.5 tackles for losses, and 2.5 sacks in 14 games, while also tallying one forced fumble.

Standing at 6-foot-3, 318 lbs., Hunter possesses a perfect frame for a defensive tackle at the NFL level. The 23-year-old prospect proved to be a stout run defender in his lone season with the Red Raiders, as he finished with a PFF run defensive grade of 84.5 in 2025.

In addition to his strong efforts against the run, Hunter was also a key contributor against opposing team's pass game, as he racked up 19 quarterback hurries and five quarterback hits. His ability to get home in pass rush situations while also being a outstanding run defender up the middle is a perfect combination that will help his development track in the NFL.

Looking at how the well-rounded playmaker will fit into the Panthers' defense in 2026 and beyond, Hunter will be a perfect addition to Carolina's defensive line. The Panthers were able to hit on 2025 second-round pick Nic Scourton, and with the addition of free agent signing Jaelon Phillips, the Panthers' front four on defense should take a significant step forward heading into next season.
