The Carolina Panthers could look to add to their offense ahead of the 2026 season and are being connected to Jonnu Smith.
As the NFL offseason rolls into OTA's and minicamp here in May and June, football will be here before we know it.
For the Carolina Panthers, the expectations are high going into this season. They are fresh off a big NFC South title in the 2025 season and now will look to repeat that as well as win a playoff game. Under Dave Canales, the vibes are high for this franchise as he's shown he can get them to the postseason.
But it will also be an important year for parts of the roster, including quarterback.
Bryce Young is entering his fourth season and the Panthers will have a decision to make in terms of giving him an extension or not. While Young played better in 2025, he needs to show more improvement in 2026 to leave no doubt.
The Panthers have surrounded him with talent, especially after the season rookie receiver Tetairoa McMillan had. But is there room to add more this offseason?
ESPN links Carolina Panthers to Jonnu Smith
One area the Panthers could look to improve at is tight end. They could use some more depth there, as Tommy Tremble would be the starter, followed up by Ja'Tavion Sanders and Mitchell Evans.
ESPN's Matt Bowen believes that the Panthers are the best fit for Jonnu Smith who is currently a free agent:
Smith would give the Panthers a move -- or "F" -- tight end who can create schematic advantages due to his alignment versatility. He can flex outside in 12 personnel (two tight ends), while getting targets on unders and screens.
Wherever he lines up, Smith can be a reliable catch-and-run target for quarterback Bryce Young. Smith had 38 receptions in Pittsburgh last season, and 68.4% of his career receiving totals have come after the catch.
It would make a lot of sense to add another tight end and improve that room. This move would give Young another receiving option in the offense. Smith has proven he can be a yards after catch monster which is something that never hurts an offense to add.
The other thing to note is that signings now will not count against the comp pick formula either. That makes it even more intriguing to try and add another piece.
