Ex-Panthers Defensive Back Doesn't Hold Back on Xavier Legette cover image

In a world that rewards over the top personalities – especially in sports – Xavier Legette has managed to win the hearts of fans worldwide.

However, one former Carolina Panthers hasn’t taken too kindly to Legette’s antics.

After a solid career at the University of South Carolina, Legette was projected to go in the early rounds of the 2024 NFL Draft, but the Panthers ended up taking the Carolina kid with the final pick in the first round – stunning everyone.

After arriving at the Panthers’ introductory press conference, he immediately won over the fans with his country accent, eclectic personality, and a never-ending smile on his face.

He was a Carolina kid, who knew what it was like playing for a Carolina team. The fit seemed seamless.

There were some nitpicks about his game though. While massive in height, and built like a freight train, he was never the most finesse of receivers. There usually seemed to be one calling card on Legette and that he was a threat to go deep, and easy to cover everywhere else.

His rookie season in 2024 was nothing to write home about. Apart from making fans laugh with his “Dolla Bill” touchdown celebration, he was essentially an easy cover. He registered four touchdowns on 497 receiving yards and 10 yards per catch, which is fairly suboptimal for a receiver who was drafted where he was drafted.

Not only that, Legette led the team in targets, but still finished second in receiving yards, behind 34-year-old Adam Thielen. Even undrafted rookie Jalen Coker played in 11 games and started in four, and he posted 19 receiving yards less than Legette.

In the first game of the Panthers 2025 season, it was a swing and a miss for everyone on the offensive end, contributing to their terrible 26-10 loss to Jacksonville. But Legette’s three receptions on seven targets for 10 yards is starting to worry Panthers fans.

They already went through the Jonathan Mingo turmoil, now Legette? Is Tetairoa McMillan next?

Former Panthers safety, Captain Munnerlyn had something to say about Legette, and he didn’t hold back one bit.

"It don't help you win games. It don't help you catch the ball. It don't help you block somebody. The s**** and giggles are over now. It's time to put up or shut up. We wanna win football games, and you're not helping us. I want this kid to be successful so bad, but I'm tired of the excuses.”

It’s seeming like the honeymoon phase with Panthers fans and Legette has already worn off, and now Panthers alumni are fed up with the lack of production too.

Legette has the ultimate opportunity to take advantage of being a halfway decent receiver, with Coker now out for the next three games.

Carolina’s next game is Sunday afternoon against the Arizona Cardinals, where it looks to bounce back after a disappointing loss in Week 1.
