The Carolina Panthers' defense struggled in their Week 1 loss to the Chicago Bears.
The Carolina Panthers had a rough season opener against the Chicago Bears, falling 59-37. While the Panthers' offense played at a high level, their defense was exposed, allowing almost 60 points.
Carolina's run defense was egregious, allowing 291 yards and six touchdowns on 39 carries. D'Andre Swift led the way with 124 touchdowns and three touchdowns on 18 carries, while Kyle Monangai had 100 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries, and Caleb Williams added 65 yards and two touchdowns on 10 attempts.
Williams was also effective in the passing game, completing 21 of 29 passes for 269 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions.
The Panthers made major investments in their defense this offseason, signing linebacker Devin Lloyd and pass rusher Jaelan Phillips to big contracts. Lloyd inked a three-year, $45 million deal and had 13 total tackles in his debut.
Phillips signed a four-year, $120 million deal and had a sack and a tackle for loss against Chicago.
While Lloyd and Phillips had some moments in the Week 1 matchup, Carolina's defense as a whole has a long way to go if they want to win the NFC South and get into the postseason for a second straight year.
IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters ConnectOn offense, there are many positives for the Panthers to take away despite the loss. Quarterback Bryce Young had a strong performance, completing 23 of 37 passes for 361 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception while rushing for 10 yards and a touchdown on two attempts.
Jalen Coker led the way in the receiving game with eight receptions for 132 yards and two touchdowns. Reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year Tetairoa McMillan also played well with five receptions for 75 yards.
On the ground, Chuba Hubbard led the backfield with 10 carries for 49 yards and a touchdown, while Jonathon Brooks had only four carries for 14 yards but rattled off an explosive 48-yard reception.
With the offensive output, the Panthers should be confident that Young could be taking a leap. Beyond their defense struggling, another reason for the loss was Carolina's two fumbles.
The Panthers have a talented roster and will compete for a playoff spot, but they will need their defense to take a major step.
