Carolina Panthers WR John Metchie is among the Week 2 preseason winners. Find out why.
NFL analyst Moe Moton of Bleacher Report named Carolina Panthers WR John Metchie among his Week 2 preseason winners.
In the Panthers' win against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Metchie had six catches for 77 receiving yards.
"John Metchie III gained momentum going into the Carolina Panthers' Week 2 preseason game," Moton wrote. "According to Darin Gantt and Kassidy Hill of the team's official website, the Panthers mixed Metchie into the first-team offense, and he made plays during joint practices with the Jacksonville Jaguars. In Friday's exhibition outing, Metchie led the team with six receptions for 77 receiving yards. Coming into the contest, he had a good chance of making the roster with rookie third-rounder Chris Brazzell II out for the season.
"Third-year wideout Xavier Legette didn't suit up for the game because of an ankle injury. If Legette's injury lingers, Metchie could carve out a role in three-receiver sets alongside 2025 Offensive Rookie of the Year Tetairoa McMillan and Jalen Coker. Because of the Panthers' injuries at the position, he's almost certain to make the roster after signing a one-year, $1.9 million deal in March."
Metchie appeared in nine games with the New York Jets and Philadelphia Eagles last season. He put up 29 receptions for 256 yards and two touchdowns.
Metchie was the 44th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. He has played for the Houston Texans, Jets and Eagles. The playmaker enters this season with 73 receptions for 686 yards and three touchdowns.
Bryce Young already has great chemistry with Metchie. Why? Because the two were teammates in college at Alabama.
Young has 8,291 passing yards, 49 passing touchdowns, 30 interceptions, 718 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns in a Carolina uniform. He put up 3,011 passing yards, 23 passing touchdowns, 11 interceptions, 216 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns last season.
Young is set to make $12.1 million this season in the fourth year of his rookie deal. His fifth-year option is worth a guaranteed $25.9 million.
The Panthers open the 2026 season at home against the Chicago Bears. Let's see if Young and Metchie can connect for a TD.
