Fresh off a surgical preseason performance against Jacksonville, the sophomore signal-caller details the disciplined, process-driven approach fueling Carolina’s offense as they gear up for the regular season.
The Carolina Panthers did the little things right on Friday night, and that led to a 34-17 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in their penultimate preseason contest.
The Panthers started the game with a three-and-out, but the offense got rolling after that. Quarterback Bryce Young led the offense on a seven-play, 58-yard drive that ended with a Jonathan Brooks one-yard touchdown run.
When speaking to reporters after the game, Young said his performance on Friday night was one to build off. He said the team's focus wasn't on the big picture, but staying true to their process.
"Of course you always want to go out there, every time you want to score," said Young, via the Panthers. "I think for us, coach talks all the time; we're so process-oriented. We're not too big picture; 'If we don't do this, what does it mean?' And all that. We just want to put the tape out there.
"Whenever we go out there, we don't take that for granted, anytime it's a game situation. We want to maximize that. Still left one out there and then we got one in the paint, which is great, something to build off of, but you don't want to get too high. I don't want to get too low."
Young finished the night going 5 of 6 passing for 49 yards. He wants to see his teammates continue to battle through the rest of camp.
"I think a lot of it is just practice and establishing during the season," said Young. "Obviously, preseason is a big part of training camp and the development and being able to go out there in a game environment; that's big.
"But I don't think it's something you do in one night. I don't think it's something you're doing in, even, three or four for us. You have to do that day in and day out. You have to prove that to yourselves every day. Camp is way bigger than just these games, and then obviously you have to carry that into the season."
The Panthers will play their final preseason game at home against the Houston Texans on Friday. After that, the picture will change when they host the Chicago Bears in Week 1 on Sept. 13.
