The Carolina Panthers should probably avoid this potential blockbuster move.

The Carolina Panthers are definitely in business after winning the NFC South division title this past season, and they are seeking ways to further bolster their roster for a deeper playoff run next year.

The Panthers need help on both sides of the ball, and while edge rusher and safety are probably their two biggest problem areas defensively, they could stand to add another defensive tackle, as well.

Enter Dexter Lawrence, who recently requested a trade from the New York Giants and could ultimately pique Carolina's interest. In fact, the Panthers have been pitched by some as one of the top potential destinations for Lawrence.

But would it be a good idea for Carolina? That's another story.

Yes, we know that Lawrence, when right, has long been one of the best defensive tackles in football. He made three straight Pro Bowls between 2022 and 2024 and would comprise a lethal duo with Derrick Brown on the interior.

Or at least he would have.

Lawrence registered 31 tackles, a half of a sack and eight quarterback hits in a down 2025 campaign, and now, he is looking for a new contract.

The 28-year-old signed a four-year, $90 million extension with the Giants back in May 2023, a deal that began in 2024. Lawrence's issue is that the final two years of the pact do not contain any guaranteed money.

Lawrence is picking a pretty bad time to ask for a fresh contract. He missed the final five games of 2024 due to an elbow injury, and it's entirely possible the injury was still affecting him this past season.

Either that, or perhaps the Clemson product has begun to decline.

Considering the cost that it would require for the Panthers to acquire Lawrence from New York (likely a first-round pick and more), not to mention the fact that Carolina would have to provide Lawrence with a new deal, it's actually probably best that the Panthers sit this one out.

Sure, Lawrence is an enticing name, but he might not be the same player anymore, and Carolina is not in a position where it can take that risk of finding out.

If the Panthers really want a defensive tackle, they can select one in this year's NFL Draft, which offers some pretty interesting depth at the position.
