When the Carolina Panthers officially named Darrell Bevell associate head coach with an offensive specialist title, it signaled that this move goes beyond simply adding another experienced voice to the staff.

It’s a strategic step that speaks to both game-day delegation and the organization’s continued investment in helping Bryce Young take a meaningful leap in year Two.

Bevell’s history with head coach Dave Canales dates back to their time together in Seattle, where Canales worked closely with the quarterbacks while Bevell served as offensive coordinator.

Together, they were part of the staff that helped develop Russell Wilson into a Super Bowl–winning quarterback. That experience is especially relevant now. Wilson, like Young, entered the league as one of the smaller quarterbacks in the league.

Carolina is clearly hoping that background translates. Bevell’s track record includes designing offenses that lean into balance — using the run game to set up quick-game concepts and layered play-action looks that allow quarterbacks to play fast rather than reactive.

In the short term, Bevell will likely play a significant role in helping design and install offensive concepts that align with Canales’ broader philosophy. But the associate head coach designation also hints at something larger.

With Canales now tasked with managing the full scope of head coaching responsibilities — from clock management to overseeing all three phases — having a veteran play-caller on staff creates optionality.

As the season progresses, it’s entirely plausible that Bevell could assume play-calling duties if doing so allows Canales to take a more holistic, CEO-style approach on game days. Even if that transition doesn’t happen immediately, the infrastructure is now in place.

Ultimately, this hire isn’t just about refining the playbook. It’s about putting Bryce Young in an environment that has already proven capable of maximizing a quarterback with a similar profile — and giving Carolina flexibility in how the offense is run when the stakes inevitably rise.

With this being a contract year for Bryce Young who will be playing on his fifth year option, this is extremely timely.
