The New England Patriots are parting ways with WR Stefon Diggs.
New England informed Diggs that the veteran is being released.
Diggs had 85 catches for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns last season. He helped the Patriots reach the Super Bowl, where New England lost to the Seattle Seahawks.
It made zero sense for the Patriots to keep Diggs, who is currently in court for off-field issues. New England will now shift its focus to Philadelphia Eagles WR A.J. Brown, Chicago Bears WR D.J. Moore and Indianapolis Colts WR Alec Pierce.
Diggs has played for the Minnesota Vikings, Buffalo Bills, Houston Texans and Patriots. He has 942 catches for 11,504 yards and 74 touchdowns in the NFL.
The goal for the Patriots is now to find QB Drake Maye a new No. 1 WR. Maye finished the 2025 regular season with 4,394 passing yards and 31 passing touchdowns while completing 72.0% of his passes. His numbers dropped in the playoffs to six touchdown passes and four interceptions.
Maye finished the Super Bowl with 295 passing yards, two passing touchdowns and two interceptions. It's fair to wonder how he would have played against the Seahawks had he not gotten hurt against the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship Game.
Maye hurt his shoulder.
"My arm was feeling great all year. I don't think throwing was the [issue]. It's a case of having one hit in the AFC Championship Game that was unfortunate timing," Maye said after the Super Bowl.
"You can't blame things on injuries. Things happen like this all the time in the league. I was blessed this year -- what a year of health. You can't zone in on one little thing on the shoulder -- it was just unfortunate that it happened to be the throwing one. At the same time, I could have prevented it or made more plays. I was feeling like I was able to make throws in the game and was myself."
The Super Bowl showed that the Patriots need to shore up their offensive line. Maye had no time to pass the ball against the Seahawks' lethal defensive line.
"It stings. It's going to sting for a while," Maye said. "It's what makes this sport special. We were close, and you got to try to find that extra edge. I didn't play as well as I would have liked down the stretch, but I'm going to promise to do my best to work hard and get us back to those moments in those games."
