New England Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez gave a telling answer about his playing status for the team's opener against Seattle.
The New England Patriots are getting ready for their season opener against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1 of the new NFL season.
This will give the team a chance for some revenge against the team that beat them in the Super Bowl back in February. But the organization has also been dealing with the lingering contract talks with cornerback Christian Gonzalez.
Much of this stems from the Seahawks giving cornerback Devon Witherspoon a record four-year, $132 million deal. Gonzalez has believed that he deserves a new contract, leading to questions around his availability against Seattle in Week 1.
When asked about this, Gonzalez provided a very telling answer.
“I’m focused on today, right now, you know, practice," Gonzalez said.
When asked whether the ongoing contract negotiations would be finished by the time Week 1 started for New England, Gonzalez simply stated that he didn't know.
According to ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler, the talks between New England and Gonzalez are still fairly far apart. This could be playing into everything, leading to a fractured relationship between the two sides.
"My understanding of this situation is that if Gonzalez were to sign a market-setting deal -- and it will need to be just that -- then it has to be buttoned up. And the sides are not close on several elements of the deal," Fowler said.
Gonzalez has been one of the top cornerbacks in the league since the Patriots drafted him with the No., 17 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Last season, he was voted to the Pro Bowl, recording 69 total tackles and 10 pass deflections, playing in 14 games.
New England needs him on the field if they want to try to get back to the Super Bowl this season. Gonzalez is one of the more crucial players to the defense, and the secondary could be in tough shape if he misses time.
The Patriots should be careful with this situation; otherwise, he could end up asking out of the organization. Paying him what he deserves would solve a lot of issues, but whether New England agrees to his terms remains to be seen.
Both sides want to get a deal done, but money tends to be the biggest decider in how these situations go.
The Patriots and Seahawks will kick off the new NFL season next week on Sept. 9 at 5:20 p.m. PT/8:20 p.m. ET on NBC.
