Elijah Ponder was unheralded as an undrafted free agent just one year ago. Today, he’s the New England Patriots’ most prolific and consistent pass-rushing threat.

Ponder’s year-two leap was on full display in Sunday’s dominant 45-17 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders, but it's been building since the stretch run of the 2025 regular season.

The former Cal Poly Mustangs’ edge rusher came into the league with an athletic profile and production that far exceeded his draft stock. Ponder impressed during his pre-draft workouts — registering an RAS of 9.70 out of 10.00 (62nd of 2,012 defensive end prospects from 1987-2025) that included a 4.63 second 40-yard dash, 1.56 second 10-yard split, 41” vertical jump and 11’ broad jump — and carved out a role on special teams to begin his professional career.

As a rookie, Ponder began to see an increased snap share as a rotational pass rusher in the latter stages of the regular season, and finished his inaugural campaign with 24 total tackles, four sacks, three quarterback hits, 17 total pressures, eight stops, and two fumble recoveries.

In the postseason, Ponder made his most notable impact — recovering a fumble forced by linebacker Christian Elliss in the second quarter of the AFC Championship Game, setting New England up at the 12-yard line for their lone touchdown in the win.

Ponder continued his forward momentum into the offseason, and earned extensive opportunity to contribute with the first-team defense. Initially, his additional reps were born of necessity — given the absences of Harold Landry and Gabe Jacas — but later, built solely on his own merit. He took full advantage, showcasing further development that had those in the building and the media alike raving about his potential as a top option in the room.

In five games to start the his sophomore campaign, Ponder’s 4.5 sacks have already set a career-high and lead the Patriots’ defense by a wide margin (Jacas, 1.5, ranks second on the team), as do his 18 pressures, four quarterback hits, and 83.4 pass-rushing grade — which ranks second among all edge rushers from the 2025 rookie class (per PFF).

His 15.3% pass-rush win-rate on the season ranks second among New England edge rushers (Dre’Mont Jones, 20.5%), and he’s been elite on true pass sets (rushes without play-action or screens included) — registering a season-long grade of 90.7 (second in the NFL) and leading the team with a 22.8% pass-rush win-rate.

Ponder’s growth as a pass-rusher culminated in a career day against Las Vegas, but was representative of the work he's put in day after day since joining the team. He set a career-high with 2.0 sacks, forced one fumble (on a second quarter strip sack of Kirk Cousins), registered five pressures, tied Jacas for the team-lead in pass-rush win-rate (26.1%), and led all NFL edge rushers in defensive grade (93.2), pass-rush grade (92.0), and true pass set pass-rush grade (94.4).

In the win, Ponder became the first New England defender to record at least 0.5 sacks in four consecutive games since Josh Uche in 2022.

Ponder has used his expanded opportunity to become an invaluable asset for the Patriots’ defense, effectively using his rare athletic traits to transform New England’s pass rush and string together consistent production.

What was once a projection has become reality — and Ponder has become the Patriots’ most dependable edge rusher in the process. Paired with Jacas and Jones, the trio of pass rushers have turned a key weakness into a strength. The most unlikely of the group, Ponder has led the way, and doesn't look to be slowing down any time soon.

The Patriots found a diamond in the rough with Elijah Ponder, but he’s quickly proving he’s worth far more than his unpolished beginnings suggested.
