Many feel Tommy DeVito will be the definite QB2 going into the 2026 regular season.
Eliot Wolf had a few things to go over this week in his pre-draft press conference. The A.J. Brown trade saga, Christian Gonzlaez's extension, Top 30 visits, and what the team is looking to acquire position-wise on draft night.
A full rundown of what Wolf said can be watched on this week's episode of the Patriots Roundtable Podcast.
In the midst of all that, the Patriots VP of Personnel shared a few tidbits about other news regarding the team. One of which was the team's decision to bring back third-string quarterback Tommy DeVito after he was set to explore the free-agent market this offseason.
The team retained DeVito on a two-year, $4.4 million extension. It was a move that seemed to set him up to return as the emergency QB3 with Joshua Dobbs still under contract for another year, making him the backup behind Drake Maye.
However, Dobbs would soon be released.
When speaking to reporters this week, Wolf let everyone know what was behind the decision to bring DeVito back and move off of Dobbs.
"It was really less about Josh specifically and more about the development and growth that we saw from Tommy DeVito in his practice reps last year," Wolf said. "He was, as Josh was as well, a great resource for Drake."
DeVito rose to fame in the NFL with the work he put in as the starter on the New York Giants for a brief period. The Patriots picked him up on a waiver claim in August of 2025. He sat behind both Maye and Dobbs all season long, not seeing a single snap on the field in 2025.
It was on the practice field where it seemed that DeVito thrived as he seemingly made strides ahead in his development with the team.
Whatever Josh McDaniels, Mike Vrabel, and Eliot Wolf saw in 2025 was impressive enough to want to nudge him into the QB2 position in 2026.
The Pats' front office is highly aware of bringing in a quarterback either late in the draft or around the NFL. Mike Vrabel even said so at the NFL's annual league meeting a few weeks ago; Wolf furthered his head coach's comments this week.
"We've evaluated all the quarterbacks. We're continuing to do that. We're looking at some pro options as well," Wolf said. "We'll continue to evaluate the position, whether that's draft, a pro free agent, a college free agent, or however it ends up falling."
Time will tell what they decide to do for their QB3.
