Should we be alarmed at Wolf's comments here?

It's been said a lot this offseason that the New England Patriots need to pay Christian Gonzalez what he's worth. Everyone knows it, the fans know it, the front office hopefully knows it, and Christian Gonzalez, who has been highly quiet this offseason, definitely knows it.

So do a lot of secondary players from Patriots past, with the likes of Rodney Harrison and Ty Law speaking up about how the Patriots need to lock him in long term, and they've got to get it done before they'll need to pay Drake Maye.

As different news stories surrounding the Patriots transpire right now, the Gonzalez contract extension talks resurfaced on Monday during Eliot Wolf's pre-draft press conference.

The VP of Player Personnel was asked whether there was any update on the A.J. Brown trade and on contract extension talks with Gonzalez.

"No Gonzalez update," Wolf said. "Other than, I'll continue to publicly say that we want Christian here, and again, he's under contract, so we would expect that."

The extension talks around the Patriots' third-year shutdown cornerback have been going on since the final whistle blew on Super Bowl LX and the Patriots hung their head in defeat.

Wolf's comments are interesting. Yes, Gonzalez is under contract for this upcoming season. Yes, they want him here and expect him to add to his incredible resume. However, that sounds like a warning shot from the Patriots' front office to Gonzalez and his reps.

Nobody wants to see this relationship between the two parties start to disintegrate this early.

The Patriots have picked up a fifth-year option in terms of their cornerback, a move that many felt was a surefire sign that a deal would be worked out.  Gonzalez is set to make only $4 million in 2026. He's coming off playing in the Super Bowl, where he made Seahawks star wideout Jaxon Smith-Njigba a non-factor.

A move to put an extension in play after next season is a sign of good faith from the organization and boosts Gonzalez's morale to perform at an even higher level.

In 2025, Gonzalez totaled 69 tackles and 10 passes defended over the span of 14 games. Injuries slowed him a bit early in the season, but there was no issue when he stepped back onto the field. There were hardly any quarterbacks last season who stepped foot on the field and really wanted to throw in Gonzales' direction.

Let's hope that what's done is right. Gonzalez comes across to fans as a homegrown talent; it'd be a shame if the Patriots let that walk because the organization is pinching pennies.
