The Patriots will appear on the hit HBO show in 2027, and it comes at a time of pivotal decision-making for the franchise going forward.
The defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks will be on the 2026 version of HBO's Hard Knocks. It will be an inside look at how a team that just reached the pinnacle of NFL success handles things going forward.
Next year, it will be the New England Patriots on the show, and it comes at a time when the Patriots may be making some huge decisions for their franchise going forward.
For two decades, the Patriots bulldozed every team in their way and stood at the top of the NFL. Yet it was rare for cameras to be allowed in the building behind the scenes to see the inner workings of a dynasty.
Some would argue that it was the right move at the time; others, especially towards the end of the Brady/Belichick run, would say otherwise.
When cameras do arrive in Foxborough in 2027 to film the offseason/training camp workings of the New England Patriots, it will come at a time when the new face of the franchise, Drake Maye, is up for a contract extension.
It's going to be a decision by the team that some feel is the biggest move in recent memory. This could be the biggest financial commitment in team history, and the Hard Knocks team will be getting to cover it most likely by episode one.
There's a high chance that Patriots owner Robert Kraft already is getting his ducks in a row long before the time Hard Knocks producers show up on his doorstep. The Patriots would love to have a deal in place for Maye by then, rather than having cameras film him on the sidelines in a white shirt as he waits out a new contract for 2027.
This is something we see time and time again and may see with cornerback Christian Gonzalez. The Patriots' shutdown corner is unlikely to step foot on the field in training camp this summer without a new deal, even after the team utilizes a fifth-year option that would guarantee him $18.1 million in cash for the 2027 season.
Maye is set to take home $4.1 million in cash next season. He's coming off a Super Bowl appearance, an All-Pro season that had stats that rivaled peak Tom Brady, and a near NFL MVP win. There is no doubt in anyone's mind that the Pats, who have been a stingy organization in the past, will need to pay the future of their franchise a historic chunk of change come 2027.
