Seattle Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon agreed to a record-breaking extension that will change Christian Gonzalez's market for the New England Patriots.
The New England Patriots are working on an extension for star cornerback Christian Gonzalez, but that could get more complicated now with Seattle Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon agreeing to a new deal.
Witherspoon reset the market, inking a four-year $132 million deal, with $101 million guaranteed, which makes him the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history.
With Witherspoon's deal done, Gonzalez's camp will likely seek a deal that will make him the highest-paid cornerback.
Gonzalez is coming off a great season in 2025, finishing with 69 total tackles, a tackle for loss, and 10 pass deflections. The 24-year-old cornerback is one of the best defensive backs in the league, and New England needs to lock him up on a long-term deal.
He can shut down the opposing team's top receiver, neutralizing one side of the field. Gonzalez was a key piece for the Patriots' defense in the 2025 season as they made it to the Super Bowl.

Earlier this offseason, running back Bijan Robinson inked a record-breaking deal at the running back position, only to be topped by Jahmyr Gibbs' deal a couple of days later.
That is likely how the Gonzalez contract is trending, and he will reset the cornerback market once again. New England has the cap space to get a deal done and have him as a staple of their defense for years to come.
Heading into the 2026 season, the Patriots will be looking to contend. They made a surprise run to the Super Bowl in 2025, but were blown out by the Seattle Seahawks.
New England was aggressive in upgrading the roster this offseason, acquiring star wide receiver AJ Brown in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles while signing Romeo Doubs, Alijah Vera-Tucker, Dre'Mont Jones, and Kevin Byard III to deals in free agency.
With the reinforcements coming in, if the Patriots can lock in core players like Gonzalez and Drake Maye long-term, they could be an AFC contender for the next decade.
