New England Patriots’ cornerback Christian Gonzalez has been ranked as part of the NFL’s Top 100 list ahead of the 2026 season.
The NFL has been incrementally revealing its annual “NFL’s Top 100” rankings — a list of the league’s best players as voted on by their peers — leading up to the start of the 2026 regular season. The New England Patriots have now made three appearances on the list, with cornerback Christian Gonzalez ranked 28th overall.
Gonzalez joins New England newcomers A.J. Brown (No. 80 overall) and Kevin Byard III (No. 61 overall) after allowing a career-best passer rating of 57.0 when targeted (including the playoffs) last season.
2025 didn’t start smoothly for Gonzalez, who injured his hamstring on the first day of training camp and didn’t return to the lineup until Week 4 of the regular season. When he did finally take the field, he proved to be one of the NFL’s elite lockdown corners.
Gonzalez led all players in the Patriots’ secondary with 106 targets faced last year, and was consistently excellent even when facing a high volume of looks. He ranked fourth among all NFL corners with 13 pass breakups during the regular season, and became even more suffocating in coverage during the postseason.
During New England’s playoff run, Gonzalez allowed a passer rating against of just 38.3, broke up six passes, and recorded his only interception of the season in the fourth quarter of the AFC Championship Game victory in Denver. In Super Bowl LX, he held Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba to just one reception on five targets when in coverage.
On a weekly basis, Gonzalez put his unique combination of size, speed, fluid athleticism, and IQ on display, erasing the opponent’s top wide receivers from offensive gameplans. And as the competition heightened, so did his play — not only in coverage.
Gonzalez made his greatest developmental strides as a tackler in 2025, as was a pointed directive from Mike Vrabel and the Patriots’ coaching staff all year long. Vrabel specifically highlighted a turning point in Gonzalez’s physicality after New England’s Week 16 comeback victory at the Baltimore Ravens.
With 74 solo tackles and just a 1.1% missed tackle rate, Gonzalez set new career-bests in both categories and ranked top-five in the league at the position. His 90.4 tackle rating ranked number one among all NFL cornerbacks in 2025.
Now eligible to renegotiate his rookie deal for the first time since being drafted by New England with the 17th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Gonzalez’s future in Foxboro has been a headliner around the league this offseason. The two sides seem to be closing in on a deal that would make him the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL, as Patriots’ owner Robert Kraft commented on day one of training camp:
"We love Christian Gonzalez. We love him as a player, as a person, and that's why we've made an offer to him to make him the highest-paid player to ever play that position in the NFL. And coincidentally, it is the highest contract in Patriots franchise history. So we're glad we drafted him, he's developed here, and we hope he'll be with us for a long time."
Extending Gonzalez remains priority one on New England’s off-field agenda — and he won’t be getting any cheaper as his status around the NFL continues to ascend.
