When New England Patriots QB Drake Maye takes the field on Sunday against the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship Game, he will have a chance to accomplish a feat that Tom Brady never achieved.
Brady never won a playoff game in Denver. In fact, the Patriots franchise has never won in the Mile High City.
As a result, Maye is motivated.
"It'd be huge," Maye said. "I mean, just the AFC Championship, the chance to go to the Super Bowl. That'd be huge. Another road environment that's had success in the past. They've had success since Coach [Sean] Payton has been there, and they have great players, and they've got a great team.
"I know it would be a big-time win, obviously, and I think for us just to play to our standard and play to our road – kind of what we've been doing on the road all season long. I know it's going to be a tough challenge. They've got a great team, so we're going to have a tough challenge, but I'm looking forward to getting out there, and getting a chance to possibly celebrate on an away field would be pretty special."
The Patriots are favored to beat the Broncos, who will not have starting QB Bo Nix. New England is one win away from reaching the Super Bowl for the first time since the 2018 season.
Maye, who could win the MVP Award this season, doesn't mind playing on the road because it brings the entire team together.
"I think playing on the road is – one of the coolest things is coming off the field at their place, with screaming fans, and coming out with a win," Maye said. "I think it's pretty cool to celebrate and celebrating in an away locker room that's different. Coach [Mike Vrabel] has always been saying, 'Road warriors.'
"So, we're trying to find that one more time and finish out strong what we've done this year. We've got a tough job and a tough challenge, but I think the guys will be pumped up and ready for it."
If the Patriots beat the Broncos, they will face the Los Angeles Rams or Seattle Seahawks in the Super Bowl.
Let's see if Maye can lead New England to the big game.
