The Patriots have spent the early part of the offseason attacking clear weaknesses, and the offensive line was near the top of the list. Alijah Vera-Tucker may be their biggest fix yet. A legitimate starting-caliber upgrade — and a bet worth making at 26 years old.

The New England Patriots’ 2025 playoff run revealed several deficiencies that the team has already worked to address through the early portion of the 2026 offseason.

Day one was marked by an addition at edge rusher in Dre’Mont Jones, the signing of a top-flight fullback in Reggie Gilliam, and, in the waning hours of the evening, a massive swing along the offensive line with former New York Jets guard Alijah Vera-Tucker.

Vera-Tucker (26) entered free agency after missing the entire 2025 season due to a triceps injury, but played at a Pro Bowl-caliber level in New York when he last saw the field in 2024. His performance during the 2024 season was strong enough to land him in New England on a three-year, $42 million contract that could be worth up to $48 million.

Originally drafted by the Jets with the 14th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Vera-Tucker entered the league as a tackle-to-guard convert out of USC. He played his entire rookie season at left guard before moving primarily to right guard, but he has also taken snaps at both tackle spots in the pros.

New England was rumored to be interested in Vera-Tucker during the pre-draft process in 2021, and now the Patriots have had four years of AFC East tape to evaluate.

When he is on the field, Vera-Tucker is a steady run blocker at guard, earning a PFF run-blocking grade of at least 76.3 in each of the past three seasons he has been in action. His highest-graded year was 2024 — when he posted an overall grade of 77.7, a run-blocking grade of 76.3, and a pass-blocking grade of 74.5. His 2.8% pressure rate in 2024 ranked fourth among qualifying guards league-wide, and it paired a clear step forward in pass protection with what he already brings in the run game.

Vera-Tucker now slots in as the Patriots’ projected starter at left guard, and continues the reshuffling along the offensive line that began late last week, when New England traded starting center Garrett Bradbury to the Chicago Bears in exchange for a 2027 fifth-round pick.

That move signified a positional change for last year’s left guard, Jared Wilson, back to his collegiate position in the middle of the line. Wilson entered the 2025 NFL Draft process with a 9.98 out of 10 in Relative Athletic Score (RAS), ranking him second of 622 center prospects in RAS since 1987.

Now, Wilson’s move to center is essentially confirmed — and the Patriots have found a high-end starting guard to upgrade the line around him. Vera-Tucker — if healthy — will provide much-needed stability along the left side of a New England offensive line that allowed an NFL record 21 sacks during last season’s playoff run.

It did not take long for the Patriots to identify their guy, and they paid him handsomely to come in and mask the issues that plagued them late last season. At just 26 years old, New England’s signing of Vera-Tucker is a bet that his best football is still ahead of him — and that they will be able to get exactly that out of him over the course of the next three years.
