Could the New England Patriots sign Jadeveon Clowney?
The New England Patriots have been named a "logical landing spot" for Jadeveon Clowney by NFL analyst Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report.
Clowney is a free agent. He played for Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel in Houston and Tennessee.
"Clowney would help just about any defense looking to bolster its front, though he might have the most impact by landing with one of the many franchises that can offer a preexisting coaching connection," Knox wrote.
Clowney played for the Dallas Cowboys last season. The veteran put up 8.5 sacks, 24 solo tackles, 12 tackles for loss and 10 QB hits in 13 games.
A three-time Pro Bowler, Clowney is 33. He has 66.5 career sacks in the NFL.
The Patriots lost to the Seattle Seahawks in the Super Bowl last season. Adding Clowney to Vrabel's defense would make New England more formidable defensively, especially when attacking opposing QBs.
"By signing Clowney, New England would get some much-needed depth for this unit while also adding a potential plug-and-play starter if their unproven youngsters can't make a leap," Knox wrote.
New England racked up 35 sacks in 2025. That was good for only 25th in the NFL. Vrabel needs an elite pass rusher to lead his defense and Clowney fits that bill to a T.
In Year 2 of the Vrabel era, the Patriots face the Seahawks, Pittsburgh Steelers, Jacksonville Jaguars, Buffalo Bills, Las Vegas Raiders, New York Jets, Chicago Bears, Miami Dolphins, Green Bay Packers, Detroit Lions, Los Angeles Chargers, Minnesota Vikings, Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos. That's a pretty tough schedule.
New England may need to bolster its defense with a signing to make the playoffs.
Clowney tallied at least 5.5 sacks in four of the last five years. He's proven he can set an edge, disrupt in the backfield and play run defense at a high level regardless of the system.
Speaking of system, since Clowney played for Vrabel in Houston and Tennessee, the former No. 1 overall pick is already familiar with the Patriots' defense.
