The Patriots' new right guard wants to see what life is like in the NFL in January and maybe even February.
The New England Patriots made it a point this offseason to strengthen their offensive line to protect Drake Maye in year three. One of the team's acquisitions was veteran and former New York Jets lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker.
Vera-Tucker was drafted by the Jets back in 2021. He played 43 games in a green and white jersey and never made the postseason. Seeing the team he now plays for making a run within a game of winning the Vince Lombardi Trophy struck a chord with the free agent signee and how badly he wanted to go the distance as a player.
Vera-Tucker spoke to reporters this week about the passion he saw from Pats Nation over the last five seasons. All the road games to Gillette Stadium as a Jet, and even all the home games at MetLife Stadium, AVT noticed the commitment the fan base had.
"Just the energy, man," Vera-Tucker recently told reporters at Gillette Stadium. "Honestly … Every time, being with the Jets the past five years, whenever the Patriots came to MetLife [Stadium], or we came here, there was always great energy, passion … You can really feel it, so I'm definitely looking forward to that."
Vera-Tucker's three-year deal with the Patriots comes with incentives based on the fact that, despite putting up great numbers at a level that made him a Pro Bowler, he has also battled injuries.
The former New York Jet only played around 50% of his games. He was injured after just seven games in 2022 and was out for the entirety of the 2025 regular season as well.
Getting back to an elite level of play seems to be key for AVT, and doing so in front of a passionate fan base is what's keeping him motivated. He also looks forward to an appearance in the postseason.
"I'm very hungry man," Vera-Tucker said about a potential playoff run in Foxborough. "It's unfortunate when you've been in the league for six years and you haven't been to the playoffs yet. But that's something I'm really looking forward to. Obviously, everybody knows it's not given; it's definitely earned. Everything that we did last year, no one really cared about. It's all about getting back there—what we can do each individual day to strive for that."
