The New England Patriots made a risky move overnight when they signed one of the top left guards in free agency, former New York Jets guard Alijah Vera-Tucker. It's been reported that Vera-Tucker has been brought up for a three-year, $42 million deal.
Although this move may not have been what Patriots fans and analysts are gnawing at the bit to hear, it still comes with some interesting follow-up news.
One of the biggest points made in the signing of Vera-Tucker is that he has been very injury-prone. In five seasons, Vera-Tucker has suffered three season-ending injuries. Including a torn tricep in both arms (2022, 2025) and a torn Achilles (2023). Greener pastures are here, though, for the Jets' former offensive lineman, and so is the opportunity for financial gain if he stays healthy.
It's now been reported that the Patriots have sweetened the deal with Vera-Tucker by offering an added incentive if he can stay healthy throughout the 2026 season.
The three-year, $42 million deal also includes a $250,000 bonus for each game he is active in. This move alone makes Vera-Tucker's contract one of the largest per-game active-roster bonuses in NFL history.
When healthy, AVT has been a menace to defenses. If that's the case, the Patriots could be in for either one extreme or the other by the time the kickoff of the regular season begins.
The newly acquired offensive lineman was a 2021 draft pick by the New York Jets from the USC Trojans. AVT made the PFWA All-Rookie Team in 2021 and has a 75.4 overall Pro Football Focus (PFF) grade over his career. Let us not forget that he also has an 80.2 career run-blocking grade.
Seems like a solid addition to try to keep Drake Maye safe next season.
Vera-Tucker has to dress each week to earn the bonuses; however, after his three-year contract in New England is up, he could walk away with an extra $12.75 million in bonuses if he never misses a game during his time in Foxborough.
