The New England Patriots have reportedly pulled off a surprising trade with an AFC East rival.
The New England Patriots are gearing up for what they hope will be another Super Bowl run in 2026. Mike Vrabel is entering his second year with the franchise and found overwhelming success in year one.
As training camp continues and the preseason gets set to begin, the Patriots made a surprising roster move on Monday, August 10.
According to a report from NFL insider Jordan Schultz, New England has finalized a trade with the AFC East rival Miami Dolphins. The Patriots will send offensive tackle Caedan Wallace to the Dolphins.
Schultz also noted that New England was planning to release Wallace before the Dolphins materialized as a trade partner.
"Trade: The Patriots are trading OT Caedan Wallace to the Dolphins, per sources," Schultz reported on X. "New England planned to release Wallace, but Miami called and were able to get him before the move was processed."
Another report from ESPN's Jeremy Fowler revealed that New England is acquiring a 2028 sixth-round pick in exchange for Wallace and a 2029 seventh-round pick.
Wallace, a former third-round pick by the Patriots, never developed into the starting caliber talent they thought they were getting. Perhaps a change of scenery will be what he needs to get his NFL career back on track.
Back in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Patriots thought highly enough of Wallace to make him the No. 68 overall pick. During that draft, there was surprise that he was taken so high. Obviously, the pick ended up being a reach and Wallace never made it to his third season with New England.
Standing in at 6-foot-5 and 320 pounds, Wallace has great size for an NFL offensive tackle. Unfortunately, he has been unable to figure things out at the professional level.
At the end of the day, the Patriots being able to get some compensation for Wallace instead of releasing him was a major win. In the grand scheme of things, wasting a third-round pick always hurts.
Only time will tell what the future has in store for Wallace. A fresh start in Miami could be exactly what he needed. He will also have a chance to face off against New England twice per season if he is able to make the cut with the Dolphins.
