Maybe Bill Belichick was not that much of a curmudgeon after all.
Or maybe his resume just holds up so much so that even the people he has had complex relationships with in the past will still come to defend him.
On Tuesday, it was announced that Bill Belichick will not be a first-ballot Hall of Famer, after it was reported by ESPN that Belichick did not receive the 40 out of 50 votes needed to get inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, later this year.
The NFL social media world blew up on Tuesday evening, with many of his former players, coaches, and even opponents coming to his defense, believing that if an eight-time Super Bowl-winning coach cannot get into the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility, then who can?
As opinions began to file in, you could not help but wonder what Tom Brady and Robert Kraft think about all of this. It turns out that by Wednesday, we will all find out.
Brady's statement was clear as day; he was baffled by the announcement that the coach he had won six Super Bowls with was not a first-ballot Hall of Famer. Brady was asked during an appearance on the Brock & Sock radio show in Seattle.
"I don't understand it," Brady said. "I mean, I was with him every day. If he's not a first-ballot Hall of Famer, there really is no coach that should ever be a first-ballot Hall of Famer."
Belichick and Brady are forever intertwined by their accomplishments in New England. No matter their past differences and the disagreements they may have had towards the end, Bill & Tom seem to have always shown some public support for one another in recent years now that the dynasty they created seems to be a thing of the past, looked back upon fondly by many.
Another impactful statement came from Patriots owner Robert Kraft, who acknowledged that right now he and his former coach may not see eye to eye at the moment, but there is no way that Belichick should not have been selected for the Hall of Fame.
Kraft and Brady's support of Belichick this week is enough to make Patriots fans' hearts sing. The trio that was key in building a two-decade-long reign on the NFL, showing camaraderie, is a nice sight to see.
Especially when the current Patriots team is a week and a half away from playing in another Super Bowl.
Yes, Belichick may have been known to be a little cold to some, but it's clear that those who were close with him on a regular basis for 20 years still think the news about him this week is absurd.
