From UDFA to playoff contributor, Elijah Ponder’s trajectory with the Patriots offers an encouraging look at what’s possible through hard work and opportunity.
The New England Patriots relied on significant contributions from their rookie class to achieve great success on the field in 2025 — but not every first-year standout was selected by the team in the NFL Draft.
Our New England Patriots’ 2026 “Year Two Leap Candidates” series continues today — and we’ll be returning to the trenches. This time, we’ll be taking a closer look at a position group that the team needs great internal development from: edge rusher.
Year Two Leap Candidate: EDGE Elijah Ponder

Mandatory Credit: David Butler II-Imagn ImagesElijah Ponder was the most unlikely of key contributors during New England’s run to Super Bowl LX, but became just that after originally being signed as an undrafted rookie free agent (UDFA) last offseason.
The former Cal Poly Mustangs edge rusher came into the league unheralded, but with an athletic profile and production that showed potential for development. In his 47 career collegiate contests, he accrued 167 tackles, 26 ½ sacks, one interception (returned for a touchdown), seven pass breakups, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and two blocked kicks.
He led the Big Sky Conference with 10 sacks in 2023, and earned All-Conference First-Team Defense, FCS All-American Third Team Defense and Walter Camp FCS All-American honors that same year.
Ponder impressed during his pre-draft workouts with a 4.63 second 40-yard dash, 1.56 second 10-yard split, 6.99 second three-cone drill, 4.28 second 20-yard shuttle, 22 bench press reps, and jumped out of the building with a 41” vertical jump and 11’ broad jump. His testing measurables registered an RAS of 9.70 out of 10.00, ranking 62nd of 2,012 defensive end prospects from 1987-2025.
After signing with the Patriots following the 2025 NFL Draft, Ponder carved out a role on special teams and began to see an increased snap share as a rotational pass rusher as the season went along. He finished his rookie campaign with 24 total tackles, four sacks, three quarterback hits, 17 total pressures, eight run stops, and two fumble recoveries.
In the postseason, Ponder made his biggest play of the season — recovering a fumble forced by linebacker Christian Elliss in the second quarter of the AFC Championship Game and setting New England up at the 12-yard line for their lone touchdown.
Ponder has continued his forward momentum into the offseason, and has been provided with an extensive opportunity to contribute with the first-team defense over the summer with Harold Landry and Gabe Jacas both not on the field.
Through the spring, it has been Ponder and Dre’Mont Jones aligning as the top edge rushing duo during team periods, and it seems like the second-year pro has continued to establish himself as a valuable part of the front seven in the process.
Ponder has the athleticism needed to become an impact player off the edge, and he paired that with production in the limited opportunities he had as a rookie. We’ll see if that continues into the fall — and just how much he’ll be on the field come the start of the regular season. As of now, it looks like he’s earned more run.
Looking Ahead
From UDFA to key contributor, Elijah Ponder’s consistent development throughout the course of the 2025 season saw him making impact plays in the most meaningful games during the playoffs. Still flying under-the-radar, Ponder turned himself into a valuable rotational piece along the Patriots’ defensive line in short order — and his athleticism and coachability may be factors that see him continue to rise amongst the ranks of a wide-open position group.
