The New England Patriots pulled off a thrilling upset victory late over the AFC East-rival Buffalo Bills at Highmark Stadium. We review our biggest takeaways from the win on today’s episode of the Patriots Roundtable Podcast.
The New England Patriots (2-2) showcased their resilience, grit, and ability to overcome adversity in a fourth-quarter comeback win over the previously undefeated Buffalo Bills (3-1) in a Week 4 clash between AFC East rivals at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park.
On today’s episode of the Patriots Roundtable Podcast, hosts Eddie Marotta and Tyler Geis review their biggest takeaways from New England’s signature victory — highlighting key performances from unlikely stars, momentum swings that led to the upset, and the fortitude showcased by a Patriots team looking to redefine the outlook for their 2026 campaign.
Entering Sunday, New England was shorthanded on both sides of the ball On defense, cornerback Christian Gonzalez and defensive tackle Christian Barmore were both missing in action due to shoulder injuries that kept them out of practice during the week and off of the game field in Buffalo. On offense, it was a third starter at right guard in as many weeks when Ben Brown entered the mix — and Efton Chism III who filled-in at wide receiver when Mack Hollins went down with a left calf injury part-way through the afternoon. That equation didn’t seem promising for the Patriots’ chances to win, but nobody seemed to mention that to them in the locker room.
New England’s resolve was on full display, overcoming the return of turnover woes in the first half to keep the score within reach — and mount a second half of football that was their best showing to this point of the fall. Drake Maye starred when the Patriots possessed the football. His 322 total yards of offense, three touchdowns, and elusiveness to scramble and extend plays gave New England the added boost necessary to mount several long scoring drives and control the pace of the action. Maye’s connections with Efton Chism III (two receptions, 42 yards, game-winning touchdown reception) and Romeo Doubs (six catches, 58 yards) were especially notable in the win, while Hunter Henry (five catches, 62 yards) also put together his most consistent performance of the season.
Defensively, the Patriots used a zone-heavy coverage scheme and lower blitz-rate to break from their early season tendencies and compensate for their losses up-front and in the secondary. They were able to come up with timely stops — including a game-sealing interception by Craig Woodson and four three-and-outs — when it mattered most, neutralizing the use of Josh Allen’s mobility (five rushes, four yards, one touchdown) and the Buffalo running game with James Cook in the process (12 carries, 75 yards, one touchdown).
