After losing to the Seattle Seahawks in the Super Bowl, the New England Patriots cut Stefon Diggs and signed Romeo Doubs.
Diggs had 85 catches for 1,013 receiving yards and four receiving touchdowns last season, while for the Green Bay Packers, Doubs put up 55 catches for 724 receiving yards and six receiving touchdowns.
The Patriots had to part ways with Diggs, who is facing felony strangulation and other criminal charges stemming from an alleged dispute with his personal chef. However, one NFL exec isn't impressed with the Patriots' decision to replace Diggs and Doubs, per The Athletic.
“I was not high on Doubs,” the exec said, citing the receiver’s inconsistent concentration. “They did not improve on the field from Diggs. Maybe they did off the field from a headache standpoint."
Green Bay selected Doubs with the 132nd overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. He enters next season with 202 catches for 2,424 receiving yards and 21 receiving touchdowns.
The Patriots were interested in trading for Chicago Bears WR D.J. Moore, but the Bears traded Moore to the Buffalo Bills.
“Doubs was my top-rated receiver out there,” one exec said. “He’s a little inconsistent and can handle only so much, so you should play him at only one spot. But I think he’s really talented.”
The Patriots have one of the best starting QBs in the NFL in Drake Maye. The UNC product finished the 2025 regular season with 4,394 passing yards and 31 passing touchdowns while completing 72.0% of his passes.
Maye finished the Super Bowl with 295 passing yards, two passing touchdowns and two interceptions. It's fair to wonder how he would have played against the Seahawks had he not gotten hurt against the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship Game.
If the Patriots don't trade for Philadelphia Eagles star A.J. Brown, Doubs will be Maye's No. 1 target next season.
“I felt like it was an opportunity, I felt like I couldn't pass on, in terms of just continuously staying grounded and growing on and off the field, I really believe this is the place where I can fulfill that," Doubs said when he signed with New England.
