New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye is one of the frontrunners for the NFL MVP award, as he has the Patriots at 11-2, the best record in football.
Maye has thrown for 3,412 yards, 23 touchdowns and six interceptions and leads the league in completion percentage (71.5 percent) and passer rating (111.9). Additionally, he has rushed for 319 yards and a couple of scores.
The second-year signal-caller is absolutely deserving of MVP candidacy, and former New England center David Andrews — who was around for Maye's rookie campaign before retiring — agrees. However, he doesn't actually want Maye to win the award.
“‘Is he the MVP? Yes,” Andrews told CLNS. “Do I want him to win it? No.”
Why exactly?
“I’ve been a part of one MVP season,” Andrews explained. “It was the one season we didn’t win the Super Bowl.”
Andrews is referring to Tom Brady's MVP campaign in 2017, when the Pats lost to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl.

“Imagine this team. They do the unthinkable — I don’t think it’s that unthinkable, but they go to the Super Bowl,” Andrews said. “They’re sitting in a hotel room Friday night, Thursday night. They wake up having breakfast that morning. Can you imagine if this kid doesn’t win the MVP? I don’t know if it’s going to be brought up, but I think they’re gonna be pissed off. And I liked them pissed off.”
That's definitely an interesting take on the situation.
Andrews played 10 years in Foxborough between 2015 and 2024, winning a pair of Super Bowl titles along the way. So he definitely knows a thing or two about success.
Now, should New England need any more motivation than it already has to go out and win a Lombardi trophy? No, but a little extra juice never hurt anyone.
Maye is competing with Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford and Dallas Cowboys quarterback as the main challengers for MVP. Stafford is probably the main guy to be worried about, but much of it depends on what happens down the stretch.
The Patriots have a bye this week and will face the Buffalo Bills in Week 15.
