A Week 6 matchup against the Jets may not be a walk in the park for the Patriots, it seems.

New England Patriots free safety Kevin Byard has seemingly taken on the mantle as the locker room's vocal leader this season. You can catch Byard in pregame warmups getting the guys fired up and ready to play on Sundays.

A free-agent acquisition this past offseason, Byard led the league in interceptions last year during his stint with the Chicago Bears, racking up seven interceptions. The veteran safety may not have any interceptions right now. However, he has still proven his physical prowess on the field with nine combined tackles (six solo, three assisted), one pass defended, and one QB hit.

Byard has played the New York Jets before. Still, as a New England Patriot, this is his first foray into the long, heated divisional rivalry, and he already seems to know how much this Sunday's game is a "must-win" for the Patriots.

Between games, Byard has made weekly appearances on NBC Sports Boston. He gives insight into the past week's game and what fans and analysts can look for in the upcoming matchup.

On Tuesday evening, Byard appeared on air, making it clear that the Patriots aren't taking this 2-3 Jets team lightly.

"It's a divisional game, so it's the most important game because it's the next game," Byard said. "This team is going to present a lot of challenges, and I don't think we can take this lightly. I don't want to get into the talk, 'oh maybe it's a trap game,' or anything like that."

Around this time last season, the Patriots found themselves in what felt like a trap game scenario. They were fresh off the Week 5 win over the Bills and headed to New Orleans to play a less aggressive Saints team in 2025. The Patriots persevered and wouldn't lose again until December.

The Jets aren't necessarily an inferior team; they're quite competitive, especially on defense. They rank near the top of the NFL in total defense, holding multiple opponents to under 200 total yards.

The division rival does seem like a far cry from last year's 3-14 record.

"I can guarantee you, in our organization, nobody is taking this Jets team lightly at all," Byard summed things up.

A divisional win always factors into the postseason, and if the Patriots are looking to lock in back-to-back division titles, a win on Sunday helps them a lot down the road.
