Vita Vea on the New England Patriots would be lethal.
The New England Patriots have been named a trade landing spot for Tampa Bay Buccaneers star Vita Vea by NFL insider Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.
Vea has requested a trade from the Buccaneers.
"The Patriots are a fit due to their 3-4 defensive front and considerable cap space, as they have nearly $35 million remaining for 2026," Fowler wrote. "Above all else, New England truly needs an edge rusher. But there aren't ready-made solutions available at that spot. So, the next best thing would be to locate a disruptor inside to pair with Milton Williams.
"The Patriots feel their roster is better now than it was last season, when they represented the AFC in Super Bowl LX. Getting one more high-quality defensive piece would reinforce that feeling."
Vea is entering the final year of a four-year, $71 million contract. He is set to earn $17 million this season, but none of it is guaranteed. He is also set to earn a per-game roster bonus that is capped at $1 million total.
Last season, Vea appeared in all 17 games, finishing with 4.5 sacks, 13 quarterback hits and 34 tackles. The Patriots would love to have that type of production in Mike Vrabel's defense.
Vea has 35 sacks in eight seasons since the Buccaneers selected him with the 12th pick in the 2018 NFL draft. He was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2021 and 2024.
New England racked up 35 sacks in 2025. That was good for only 25th in the NFL. Vrabel needs an elite DT to lead his defense and Vea fits that bill to a T.
In Year 2 of the Vrabel era, the Patriots face the Seattle Seahawks, Pittsburgh Steelers, Jacksonville Jaguars, Buffalo Bills, Las Vegas Raiders, New York Jets, Chicago Bears, Miami Dolphins, Green Bay Packers, Detroit Lions, Los Angeles Chargers, Minnesota Vikings, Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos. That's a pretty tough schedule.
New England may need to bolster its defense with a signing to make the playoffs. Let's see if the front office goes after Vea after getting A.J. Brown from the Philadelphia Eagles.
