There are a lot of ex-Ohio football players and coaches in the building in New England, thus giving this player quite the advantage.
For just a quick second, let's drop all the A.J. Brown talk about NFL executives believing that he'll be a New England Patriot come June.
The Patriots' offseason moves have been a solid one-for-one in terms of player movement. Stefon Diggs is released, and Romeo Doubs, a player with a Diggs-like style, is signed to a four-year deal in free agency. Jaylinn Hawkins signs with the Ravens, and veteran Kevin Byard III is signed.
The Patriots had one goal: to create a pipeline at numerous positions. So why not do that at wide receiver?
The front office in Foxborough will most likely not look to draft a wide receiver high in the draft, but what about when they get to the sixth and seventh rounds?
Enter John Carroll University's Tyren Montgomery. The Division III wide receiver has emerged as a target for the Patriots if they were to want to add another weapon to Drake Maye's arsenal to develop over time.
At 5' 11" and 190 lbs, Montgomery is a receiver who made a case for himself based on his 2025 season at John Carroll. With 119 catches, 1,528 yards, and 15 TDs, he gained a lot of draft stock for his performance at the Senior Bowl, showcasing his ability to compete against Power 4 defensive backs.
His stats and on-the-field prowess are not the only things that could lure him to Gillette Stadium in the weeks and months to come.
The Patriots may be based in New England, but they have many Ohio football connections in the building. It trickles down from the top with Mike Vrabel, and an Ohio State guy through and through. Let us also not forget running back TreVeyon Henderson, a draft pick last year out of Ohio State.
The Patriots signed edge rusher Dre'Mont Jones, who is a Buckeye alum. The real kicker here is that Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels' alma mater is none other than John Carroll University.
Why wouldn't the Patriots take a second glance at Montgomery?
The Patriots have taken skilled players late in the NFL Draft before, and even undrafted players. Just recently, Efton Chism III went undrafted in the 2025 draft, yet he worked his way into a fan favorite on the team despite limited reps.
Chism received many Julian Edelman comparisons upon his arrival at the Patriots. Speaking of Edelman, the 2009 draft class would see the Patriots draft Edelman in the seventh round, and look what came of that move.
Either way, there may be some weapons leaving the Patriots after next season. Mack Hollins is in the final year of his contract, and Hunter Henry is too. No matter who the Pats have this season for the next year or two, it would be kind of smart to see the Patriots draft a wideout to develop with Maye for the next four to five years.
There's a case to be made that Montgomery could be that guy.
