Let's not rule Diggs out yet.

The New England Patriots released Stefon Diggs at the top of NFL free agency back in March. It was the move that many saw coming, as the buzz around the league was that the Patriots did not have much of a desire to pay their star wideout what they would owe him in 2026.

That being said, while the Patriots have Romeo Doubs now and the ever-looming A.J. Brown trade, Diggs still sits out there on the market, as no team has signed him since his release.

As the draft looms near, there is the idea that the Eagles are asking too much for Brown, and although Doubs could be a worthy weapon for Drake Maye, the Pats undoubtedly need something more to add to his arsenal when it comes to experienced wideouts.

Diggs' release felt strictly financial rather than a need to move on from him for reasons related to his production or legal issues off the field. However, the former Patriot is now getting a feel for what his new price tag could be with no team publicly making a push to sign him.

So why not just come back to Foxborough on a modest, within-reason veteran's deal?

Diggs has already had a year in Vrabel's system; he was the emotional core of the locker room all year, earned his contractual bonuses, including 1,000 yards receiving, and did not leave on bad terms, as seen in his social media post after the announcement of his departure.

Even VP of Player Personnel Eliot Wolf did not rule out the Patriots bringing Diggs back before the start of the 2026 regular season.

"We’re always looking for ways to improve the team, so not gonna say that anything’s final at any position on the roster," Wolf said. "We wish Stefon the best. He was a tremendous player for us all season. I feel like wherever he goes next—if it’s elsewhere, if he comes back here—he's going to have a tremendous season."

As great as Romeo Doubs is, he has never been a WR1; Diggs has, and the two of them could wreak havoc on the field catching passes from Drake Maye.

One must think that a cheaper deal has already been floated Diggs' way by the Patriots; if he says yes, that's a different story.
