The New England Patriots are on summer break, but the construction of their 2026 roster is far from complete. Where might the team look to add to the roster before training camp kicks off? We examine.
The New England Patriots have completed the early portion of the NFL’s offseason program with Organized Team Activities (OTAs) and mandatory minicamp concluding earlier this month. While the players are enjoying their most extensive time off prior to the 2026 season, management will still be on the hunt for ways to improve the roster.
On this week’s episode of the Patriots Roundtable Podcast, we examine the most important remaining positions of need for New England to add to the roster before training camp kicks off in late July.
The Patriots worked diligently this offseason to shore up depth at several key areas of need, but a few still remain. Tight end is foremost among those. New England brought in Julian Hill from the Miami Dolphins in free agency to fill the blocking void left by Austin Hooper’s departure to the Atlanta Falcons, but the new addition suffered a season-ending injury early in voluntary spring activities. The room is filled with youth behind the reliable Hunter Henry, but as rookies Eli Raridon and Tanner Arkin adjust to their new responsibilities in a professional offense, more immediate contributions may need to be added for 2026.
Edge rusher is another area that the Patriots entered the offseason with great uncertainty at. In the latter stages of June, there are still several questions remaining about the depth at the premium position. K’Lavon Chaisson exited this spring with Dre’Mont Jones signed as a replacement, but the extended absences of Harold Landry III and second round pick Gabe Jacas leave New England thin entering training camp. There’s hope from the coaching staff surrounding Elijah Ponder and Bradyn Swinson as they prepare their second seasons with the team, but an insurance policy could be needed for a more stable rotation of contributors.
After tight end and edge rusher are filled, the Patriots may look to secure more reliable depth at several positions. Linebacker would be first on that list — with Robert Spillane’s lingering injuries impacting his production in 2025, Christian Elliss took significant reps alongside Jack Gibbens, who has been replaced by K.J. Britt this spring. Britt has been in-and-out of the rotation through the offseason program, and with little proven support behind him, adding another body off-ball will be worth monitoring.
Interior offensive line was another area that New England looked to address this offseason, and did so with the signing of Alijah Vera-Tucker and a position switch for Jared Wilson back to center. Behind the starters, the group runs thin — with Ben Brown as a “super sub” along each of the interior spots, and rookie offensive tackle Caleb Lomu shifting inside periodically during minicamp. Relying on a rookie tackle to double as a backup along the interior may not be plan A, and leaves room for another addition this fall.
Additional depth can be added at other positions, as well. Defensively, there remains uncertainty behind the starters at corner and safety, and nose tackle is a position that hasn’t been directly addressed with a proven commodity. There’s optimism in players like Kindle Vildor and Mike Brown in the defensive back room and Cory Durden along the defensive line to fill those voids, but if a better option reveals itself, it’s difficult to imagine there being any hesitation in further upgrading those positions. On special teams, more competition for Bryce Baringer has been expected, but nothing has materialized yet. That could soon change as training camp approaches.
The Patriots made key additions at the top-end of several positions of need entering the offseason. Now, it's time to fill the gaps in the middle class of the roster. That could be a revolving door of younger players looking to prove themselves during camp, or veteran additions that bring security on a more limited snap count. In either case, New England is sure to continue adding to the roster this fall.
