Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers really wanted to play on Sunday against the Chicago Bears. It's certainly understandable why, since he has a 24-5 record against the Bears all-time, and is 12-3 at Soldier Field in Chicago.
But Rodgers has a fracture in his left wrist and was limited in practice this week. Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin didn't think in made sense to force the issue in Chicago. So Rodgers is ruled out, and veteran backup Mason Rudolph will get the start.
Here's the latest from Bears Roundtable publisher Sam Phalen.
"He's not going to play today,'' Steelers coach Mike Tomlin to CBS reporter Evan Washburn on Sunday morning. "He fought his tail off all week, but that's the prudent play to make for us as a collective. So he won't be playing this week. We'll let Mason start and obviously he;'s absorbed most of the reps this week.''
Rodgers spent most of his 18 years with the Green Bay Packers, and he's dominated the Bears throughout his career. He hasn't played here since 2022, and this would have been his first game against the Bears in a different jersey.
Rodgers has shared the QB room with Rudolph since the summer. Rudolph is a seven-year vet himself, but the two did not know each other before this summer. They've developed a good bond since then.
He makes every day so much fun," Rodgers said of Rudolph. "I told him this, I said, 'Thanks for making this fun.' We joke in the quarterback room. He's got a checklist of the jokes he's got to get off out of his brain every single day. But he's hilarious, and I really enjoy our time together in the room in here, outside the facility. He's a great backup, he's super helpful during the week, he's a professional, he's ready to play, he's a gamer."
Here's the rest of the story on their relationship from Steelers Roundtable writer John Perrotto.
