The Las Vegas Raiders parted ways with this quarterback quite some time ago, and he's now off to aid UCLA's coaching staff.
The Las Vegas Raiders have had their fair share of legendary quarterbacks behind center, and one longtime member of the franchise has now opted to take his talents back to college.
Derek Carr was the Raiders' QB for nine seasons, spending his first six seasons with the franchise when they were based in Oakland, and the following three seasons in Las Vegas, all before suiting up for the New Orleans Saints in a brief two-year stint that both sides would like to forget.
Now, Carr is putting his NFL career behind him and heading back to college.
"UCLA announced it hired former NFL quarterback Derek Carr as a special advisor to its head coach Bob Chesney," ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Monday evening. "Carr now will help Chesney and the offensive staff with game-planning and also work with UCLA’s quarterbacks."
Before his time with New Orleans, Carr broke nearly every franchise record with the Raiders in his nine seasons with the team.
The 35-year-old racked up 35,222 yards, 217 touchdowns, and 99 interceptions in 142 games with the team while accumulating 63 wins as a starting QB.
To this day, Carr holds the Raiders' records for most passing yards, passing touchdowns, completions and pass attempts.
Carr signed with the Saints in March 2023, inking a massive four-year $150 million deal. The four-time Pro Bowler then abruptly announced his retirement in May 2025, noting that he couldn't "just take" money from New Orleans after multiple injuries derailed his playing career.
Just months ago, in February, the QB said that he'd unretire if it meant playing for a Super Bowl contender, but that opportunity seemingly never came knocking.
Whether that offer is still on the table or not is unknown, but Carr is seemingly taking steps away from the NFL with this signing. Despite heading to UCLA, the QB is still just 35 years old and could reasonably suit up for another NFL team in the near future if given the offer. After all, Carr has 11 years of experience at the professional level and could offer veteran leadership to any locker room.
Carr will now have an opportunity to continue his football career in his role with UCLA and help develop the school's QBs.
For those looking to keep tabs on how the UCLA Bruins perform with Carr in the mix, the first game of the regular season will take place on Sept. 5 against California at 7:30 pm PST.
