Chaos behind the scenes: Chip Kelly's Raiders tenure ended with bungled play calls and clashes over offensive control.

The Las Vegas Raiders fired offensive coordinator Chip Kelly after just 11 games running the show. It was a quick hook for Kelly, and the Raiders paid him $6 million a year to be the play-caller.

But, it has not gone well for the Raiders or Kelly. While it isn't entirely Kelly's fault - Geno Smith has also not played well - the former Ohio State OC did not do himself any favors.

After the firing, a new report surfaced of how things got so bad in Las Vegas regarding the offense.

How bad was it? Well, it seems that Kelly was even botching his own play calls, according to Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of NFL Network

"NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported this past week on The Rich Eisen Show that Kelly sometimes botched his own play calls and, on several occasions, called plays that weren't in the game plan. That's a rarity in the NFL. Kelly, a 62-year-old who has run his own offense countless times, also was miffed at how heavy-handed Carroll was with what he wanted to run, and how he wanted it run. Sources say Kelly expressed frustration about the setup."

These stats also show how bad it has been in Sin City.

"The Raiders have scored 15 points per game this season, tied for last in the NFL with the New Orleans Saints. They are also last in the NFL in yards per carry for the second straight season (3.5 in 2025; 3.6 in 2024)," Rapoport wrote.

Now, Pete Carroll, who is in his first year as Raiders head coach, wanted to bring in Geno Smith, and that move has not worked out.

But, Kelly didn't do much good, and botching his own play calls and going off-script won't sit well with anybody.

Nw, Greg Olson is once again the offensive coordinator in Las Vegas, marking the third stint he has held that role.

In Week 13, however, the Raiders lost to the Los Angeles Chargers, 31-14. Smith threw for 165 yards with two touchdowns, but he had another interception, tying him with Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa for the NFL lead with 14.

Kelly should get another job at some point, but his sting with Carroll did not go well by any means, and ripping the Band-Aid off now appears to be the right decision in the long run.
