The Raiders continue rotating Darien Porter and Hezekiah Masses at cornerback, while defensive coordinator Rob Leonard says rookie Jermod McCoy remains in the competition.
The Las Vegas Raiders are still searching for answers at cornerback, and defensive coordinator Rob Leonard has made it clear that nobody is guaranteed a starting job.
Darien Porter and Hezekiah Masses have been competing for the starting spot opposite Eric Stokes, but rookie Jermod McCoy could soon become a bigger factor.
"It's like any other competition. They're competing. They're rotating," Leonard told reporters Thursday, according to A to Z Sports.
"There's a plan to do that, and Joe Woods and all of us are heavily involved in that."
Leonard also offered an encouraging update on McCoy, a fourth-round pick recovering from a serious knee injury.
"He's doing well. He had a good week last week, and he's right in the mix as well," Leonard said.
Porter opened the season as the starter but missed time with a foot injury, creating an opportunity for Masses.
The fifth-round rookie responded with three interceptions in his first two starts, including two against the Los Angeles Chargers.
But Masses has experienced growing pains in coverage, while Porter has reclaimed a larger share of the defensive snaps.
In last Sunday's loss to the Los Angeles Rams, Porter played 43 defensive snaps compared with 29 for Masses, according to Athlon Sports' snap-count analysis.
Neither distinguished himself in coverage. Porter allowed three completions for 24 yards, while Masses surrendered two catches for 20 yards and a touchdown.
Leonard emphasized that the competition extends beyond cornerback.
"There's nothing guaranteed," he said. "I tell them, you have to put someone in a position to say, 'How can I not play this guy? He does everything right.' And until that happens with everybody, then the competition's on every day."
McCoy adds another intriguing element.
The former Tennessee standout was considered a potential first-round talent before concerns about his surgically repaired knee contributed to his slide into the fourth round.
The Raiders have been patient with his development, but Leonard's comments suggest he could soon earn additional opportunities.
Las Vegas has invested heavily in rebuilding its secondary, making the development of its young cornerbacks an important storyline.
The Raiders previously expressed confidence in McCoy despite his early struggles, while Masses earned two weekly awards after his breakout performance against the Chargers.
For now, Porter and Masses remain locked in a competition Leonard has no intention of ending prematurely.
