The Las Vegas Raiders are hiring their first coach to join Head Coach Klint Kubiak’s staff, and he is well-respected within the National Football League.
He last served as the Tennessee Titans’ interim head coach and was highly impactful for the Titans despite the team finishing 3-14 in 2025. Tennessee looked improved under the tutelage of McCoy and his influence as an offensive coach helped young quarterback Cam Ward clean up a lot of mistakes during the second half of the season.
McCoy has been coaching in the NFL since 2000, when he was hired as an offensive assistant for the Carolina Panthers. He held that role until 2008 before moving on to become the offensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos from 2009 to 2012.
His first stint with the Broncos resulted in a career-year for QB Kyle Orton and dominant offenses led by Tim Tebow and Hall of Famer Peyton Manning. With Tebow, McCoy guided the offense to being the top rushing attack in the NFL. During the 2012 season, Manning led the league in completion percentage (68.6) and success rate (54 percent).
His efforts as the play-caller of the Broncos earned him his first experience as head coach with the then-San Diego Chargers from 2013 to 2016.
“In McCoy's four seasons as head coach of the Chargers (2013-16), San Diego's offense ranked ninth in the league in total offense (365.9 yards per game) and second in third-down percentage (44.6 percent),” Titans' senior writer Jim Wyatt wrote. “In addition, McCoy's group had a top 10 passing attack each season. San Diego qualified for the postseason in McCoy's first season (2013) and beat the Bengals in the Wild Card round.”
Legendary QB Philip Rivers had some of his best seasons under McCoy, even earning AP Comeback Player of the Year in 2013 after a Most Valuable Player-caliber season. Although his final two seasons spent as head coach resulted in just nine wins, McCoy was effective in his role.
McCoy then returned to Denver as OC in 2017, but his second stint didn’t work out well and he was fired midseason. His tenure with the Arizona Cardinals as OC in 2018 also resulted in a midseason firing as the team was 1-6 through the first seven games.
He took a hiatus from the NFL for a few years before becoming the Jacksonville Jaguars’ QBs coach, helping develop star QB Trevor Lawrence from 2022 to 2024. His work with Lawrence over the years led to a promotion by the Titans, who initially hired him as a senior offensive assistant before becoming the interim head coach midseason.
He will be the right-hand man of Kubiak moving forward and the combination of his offensive mind and Kubiak’s could make for a dynamic offense in year one.
