The Las Vegas Raiders have made an intriguing move to their practice squad, signing kicker Greg Joseph amid recent struggles from kicker Daniel Carlson.
Joseph joins the silver and black as a six-year veteran, spending time with the Cleveland Browns, Tennessee Titans, Minnesota Vikings, Washington Commanders, and both the New York Giants and Jets. At 31 years old, Joseph hasn’t been able to find his home in the NFL, but maybe this new opportunity in Las Vegas could finally be what he’s been looking for.
He has converted on 90.8% of his extra-point tries during his career, and has made 82.3% of his field goals. He has struggled with distance throughout his career, only converting on 17 of 30 attempts of at least 50 yards.
Regardless, the signing comes as talks have heated up around Carlson’s down season. Previously one of the most consistent legs in the league, Carlson has seen regression in 2025, much like the Raiders as a whole.
Carlson has made just 75% of his 16 field goal attempts this season, the second-lowest of the eight-year veteran’s career. He has missed extra-point attempts at a career-high rate, making just 91.7% of his 12 attempts this season. It comes just two seasons after he hit every one of his 32 extra-point attempts in 2023.
Kickers in the NFL have just one responsibility, but it is incredibly important and consistently decides the outcomes of games. The Raiders felt the impact of bad kicking in their overtime loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars a couple of weeks ago. Carlson missed an extra point, which ultimately was the difference in the 30-29 loss.
With Carlson’s ongoing struggles, head coach Pete Carroll is hoping the problems get addressed soon.
"He wants to do right by his team, and he wants to get clear, and he's well-versed on the mentality of how you do that, the preparation and the practice to get your mind clear so that you can perform like you're capable," Carroll said. "And when they stack up on you after some time, you have to deal with it directly. So, we're addressing that right now."
In the case that things don’t turn around for Carlson, the Raiders now have another kicking option in Joseph.
