The Las Vegas Raiders signed Segun Olubi after releasing him on Sunday, and he played on special teams for the Colts.

The Las Vegas Raiders made a series of roster moves yesterday as they signed linebacker Segun Olubi after they released him on Sunday, according to the transaction report on Raiders.com.

The sequence of events leading up to this was slightly  confusing, so let’s review. The linebacker played for the Indianapolis Colts for the last four seasons, but the Raiders signed him as an unrestricted free agent back in March after his Colts contract was up.

The Raiders released Olubi during their final roster cuts on Sunday, then signed him yesterday. These kinds of machinations are typical of what often happens on cutdown day, with teams wanting to bring in specific players while releasing others in a rapid-fire fashion, so sometimes it takes a bit to get it all sorted out.

There’s been no content on the why’s and wherefores of all this so far, but 6’, 225 pound linebacker has been a productive player in Indianapolis.

Per the report, he played for the last four seasons with the Indianapolis Colts (2022-25), where he appeared in 51 games and recorded 20 tackles (14 solo), one pass defensed, one interception, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and two blocked punts. He also registered 30 tackles on special teams, the most on the Colts over that span.

Olubi is a San Diego State product, having played for the Aztecs from 2020-21, where he played in 21 games and recorded 68 tackles (34), four tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks, two passes defensed, one interception returned for a touchdown and two forced fumbles.

Before that Olubi played for several smaller schools, including Harding University (2019), Saddlebrook College (2018) and College of Idaho (2017).

He projects primarily as a special teams player for the Raiders, although he could be an important depth player given the injury history of linebackers like Nakobe Dean, who often struggled to stay on the field with the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Raiders also made a couple of moves involving their wide receivers that were a part of that same report. One was that they’ve put receiver Dont’e Thornton Jr. on injured reserve, although the report didn’t specify if it was season-ending designation or one that will allow him to return at some point. The Raiders also signed receiver Cody White to the practice squad.

The Thornton move was especially disappointing, as he produced little last year and was unable unable to step up and improve in training camp.
