The Las Vegas Raiders released Charles Snowden and three other players as they made room for new roster additions.
The Las Vegas Raiders are in the process of overhauling their roster, and they just had what’s been dubbed a successful draft after signing multiple free agents. There’s another shoe that had to drop in all of this, and that happened over the weekend when the Raiders waived defensive end Charles Snowden and made several other roster moves, according to a report from Josh Alper of Pro Football.
Snowden started his NFL career with the Chicago Bears in 2021, and he became a rotational player with the Raiders starting in 2023. He flashed some potential as a pass rusher who could hold his own against the run, but the Raiders have multiple edge rushers on their roster now, so they’ve elected to move on.
The defensive end played in a total of 31 games for Las Vegas, including 18 starts. His final stats as a Raider included 67 tackles, 4.5 sacks and an interception.
Snowden was one of four players the Raiders cut loose to make room for new additions who earned roster spots during tryouts for the team’s rookie minicamp, according to Alper. The others are guard McClendon Curtis, tight end Matt Lauter, and guard Layden Robinson.
The new additions are safety Devyn Perkins, offensive tackle Niklas Henning, tight end Patrick Gurd, and offensive tackle Kamar Missouri, but this is likely just the beginning of this sort of thing for the Raiders.
Training camp will probably be a free-wheeling affair for the Raiders. They’re breaking in two new quarterbacks with a new coaching staff, and most of the attention will be on the positional battle between Kirk Cousins and Fernando Mendoza.
But there’s going to be a lot of movement on this roster, and the final version will probably play a much bigger part in the Raiders’ success or failure this season.
One of the biggest mistakes Las Vegas madxelast season was thinking the existing roster was ready to win with better coaching and a few positional upgrades, but it’s now clear that this is a total rebuild that’s going to take 2-3 years, even with Cousins and Mendoza coming on board to upgrade the quarterback performance.
The Raiders also still have some sorting out to do with defensive end Maxx Crosby. Some of the trade rumors involving Crosby have faded a little now that the draft is over, but there was a lot of interest, and there will be going forward as well.
