The Las Vegas Raiders head into the matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars with a new wide receiver as Tyler Lockett recently signed with the team.
Lockett was in Tennessee to start the year, but the Titans are in a major rebuild and was granted a release. The Raiders offense needs a lot of help, as quarterback Geno Smith has really struggled in his first season as the team's quarterback.
Now, Lockett isn't the type of receiver that is going to come in and vault this group into one of the best offenses in the league. However, he is the exact type of professional that is going to benefit both the receivers, as well as Smith.
Lockett and Smith played together in Seattle, where they appeared in 53 games together. During that time, the duo connected on 229 passes for 2,715 yards and 16 touchdowns.
The former K-State star has never been a burner at the wide receiver position, but he has always been able to find the open spot and give his quarterback a reliable target.
For Smith, he hasn't developed a relationship like that with anybody in Las Vegas. Tre Tucker leads the team with 29 catches for 389 yards and four touchdowns. Not only is Smith reunited with his old friend, but he is also getting superstar tight end Brock Bowers back from injury.
While Lockett will help ease the pressure on Smith, where Lockett is going to be invaluable is in the locker room with some of the young wide receivers.
Tucker, Jack Bech and Dont'e Thornton are all three young wide receivers who have potential, but they don't understand yet what it means to truly be a professional.
Lockett is an elite route-runner, as he has had to be his whole career. He has never been a guy who is going to create separation with gamebreaking speed, rather, with an attention to detail that allows him to master his craft.
Especially for a guy like Thornton, this could be a huge opportunity in his career. Lockett and the rookie from Tennessee couldn't be any different.
Locket stands at 5-foot-10, 182 pounds. Thornton, on the other hand, is 6-foot-5, 205 pounds with elite speed. However, he is extremely raw in his technique as a receiver. If he embraces bringing in someone like Lockett and allows himself to learn from a true professional, then he has a chance to develop into a very good wide receiver.
The Jaguars are down some players in the secondary, especially with rookie sensation Travis Hunter on the injured reserve. This is an opportunity for the Raiders to make some strides, and don't be surprised to see Lockett contribute on and off the field in Las Vegas.
