Kirk Cousins silenced doubters with a dominant three-touchdown performance, proving Klint Kubiak’s revitalized offense can thrive and compete in the AFC West even without star targets.
Raise your hand if you picked the Las Vegas Raiders to begin the season with a 2-0 record.
Yet, here we are. The Raiders did what they were supposed to with a Week 1 victory over the Miami Dolphins at Allegiant Stadium.
However, Week 2 was expected to be a major test. It came in Los Angeles at SoFi Stadium against Justin Herbert and the Chargers.
Instead, it was the Raiders who lived up to the test with a stunning 26-14 win.
Tight end Brock Bowers didn't play due to an injury, and veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins got another start as No. 1 pick Fernando Mendoza waits his turn.
Here's what we learned from the Raiders' Week 2 win.
Kirk Cousins can still play
Cousins had an uneven performance in Week 1, which raised questions about whether or not Klint Kubiak would make the switch.
In Week 2, Cousins did much better, going 19-of-29 for 253 yards with 3 touchdowns and an interception.
How good has Cousins been? Well, here's a stat where he is next to Tom Brady and Peyton Manning, so that speaks for itself.
Cousins looked comfortable, and the absence of Brock Bowers didn't seem to bother Las Vegas.
Can the Raiders compete in the AFC West?
Two weeks ago, this question might have been laughed at by many. Still, there will probably be laughs.
However, the Chargers are 0-2 with losses to the Arizona Cardinals and Raiders. The Denver Broncos are 1-1, and Bo Nix and the offense in the Mile High City have had a tough time to get going.
Klint Kubiak has instilled plenty of life into this team and the fanbase, and although it's early, the Raiders have found ways to win so far.
It's a longshot, sure, but you never know what can happen in the NFL.
Will Fernando Mendoza start this season?
So far, it is trending towards a no. However, the schedule gets tough for Las Vegas.
- At New Orleans Saints
- Home against Chiefs
- At New England Patriots
- Home against Buffalo Bills
- Home against Los Angeles Rams
That five-game stretch will show whether or not Kubiak will bench Cousins.
Right now, the Raiders have two wins, and they are just one win away from tying their total amount during the 2025 NFL season, so you can say the Klint Kubiak era has gotten off to a home run start for Las Vegas.
