Taking a look at the Los Angeles Rams' biggest plays in the 34-0 victory over the New Orleans Saints in the second week of the preseason.
The Los Angeles Rams were able to pick up a solid team win against the New Orleans Saints, which now moves LA to 2-0 in the preseason with the possibility to move to 3-0 next week against the LA Chargers.
Overall, the Rams looked pretty solid with the defense forcing several turnovers and constantly generating pressure, in addition to the Rams' offense being run effectively as well.
So, here are the biggest takeaways from the Rams' 27-0 victory over the Saints on Saturday afternoon in SoFi Stadium.
Stetson Bennett IV is Still in a Solid Position to be QB2
Following the performance of rookie quarterback Ty Simpson in the preseason opener last week, there were some questions as to where Stetson Bennett IV would sit on the depth chart, but his performance against New Orleans seems to be something that should help him
For the game, Bennett went 19/31 for 181 yards and zero interceptions while also adding two touchdowns on the ground.
Overall, Bennett played fairly well and was able to show head coach Sean McVay what he is capable of doing and the fact that he may still be in control of the backup quarterback competition.
While Bennett did perform well, both he and Simpson have each had solid preseason game performances, so it appears that it may very well come down to the final week of the preseason before the Rams officially name a backup quarterback for Matthew Stafford.
C.J. Daniels is Progressing
Also on the offensive side of the ball, one of the biggest takeaways was the continued progression of rookie wide receiver C.J. Daniels.
Throughout training camp and the preseason, Daniels has continued to take steps forward and ultimately had his best performance yet, as he totaled six receptions for 68 yards.
Throughout the first half, Daniels did some of his damage across the middle as well as making contested catches on the sideline.
With the performance Daniels had on Saturday afternoon, he has shown that he can be successful at the NFL level, and when given the opportunity, he can make catches all over the field to contribute in the passing game.
The Rams Defense Is Very Disruptive
Defensively, the Rams forced several turnovers which was a great sign to see from the backups across the board.
In totality, Los Angeles forced three turnovers, which included one fumble recovery and two interceptions.
On that note, Rams safety Alex Cook had one of the more impressive plays of the game as he picked off a pass from Spencer Rattler and took it all the way back for a 100-yard pick-six.
In addition to the turnovers, the Rams were also very disruptive as they recorded one tackle for loss, one sack, eight pass breakups, and five quarterback hits in the shutout victory against the Saints.
When looking at the Rams' defense, the starters are already very disruptive, but now that the backups have stacked two solid games together, it seems as though Los Angeles has tremendous starters and great depth on the defensive side of the ball.
Harrison Mevis Is Becoming Very Consistent
Looking at the special teams side, the Rams got a great performance from kicker Harrison Mevis, who went 4/4 on extra points and 2/2 on field goals against the Saints on Saturday afternoon.
On the field goals, the distances were not very long, as Mevis hit from 26 yards on two separate occasions.
For Mevis, the distance is not the area to look at; it is the fact that he has become very consistent, and since becoming the main kicker for the Rams, he has only missed one kick and is now 4/4 on field goals and 6/6 on extra points this preseason.
With Mevis' performance in the preseason thus far, the Rams seem to have their kicker and should be in a great spot heading into the regular season when it comes to the kicking game.
