Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Davante Adams made a retirement joke regarding Matthew Stafford, but also revealed some truth to his joke.
Los Angeles Rams star receiver Davante Adams made a joke regarding his retirement, tying himself to Matthew Stafford.
Adams said he would retire at the same time that Stafford does. Despite the good-natured comment, the receiver has now revealed there could be some truth behind what he was saying.
Adams spoke to the media about the comment and what it has been like linking up with Stafford on the Rams in 2025.
The pair have clearly become comfortable with one another, as Adams leads the league with 14 receiving touchdowns. He has become a red zone weapon for Stafford and may be looking to remain with the veteran quarterback for as long as possible.
When speaking to the media, Adams commented on the joke he made, shedding some light on the serious nature of his comments.
"We're gonna push that pressure on him and see how he feels about it," Adams said regarding his retirement being tied to Stafford.
Despite the joke that Adams was clearly making with this comment, he did go a bit deeper into the idea of retirement.
"One, the body is getting tired anyway. That was kind of a joke, kind of serious. I really don't know how long I want to play or whatever, I just kind of mess around with him. I did make that comment to him, though, that was serious.
"At this point, I am just grateful to be a part of something like this. Just kind of read it out and see where we go. I make some serious, but not so serious, jokes. I don't even know where I'm going with it half the time. I'm enjoying it right now ... I need him to know it's kind of serious, though," Adams said.
Adams was clearly making a joke regarding his retirement, but he also appears to be serious about leaving the game when Stafford does.
Stafford also commented on his retirement to Rich Eisen recently, saying he needs to see how the rest of the 2025 season goes before he makes that decision. The star quarterback did indicate that he is having a blast playing right now, and that could lead to another season.
The Rams lead the NFC with a 10-3 record, and they may want to run it back should they make it to the big game and secure a Super Bowl victory.
Adams continues to be a bright spot for Stafford and the offense, so he may also want to remain playing with the Rams quarterback for as long as he plans to.
