Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula broke down how Myles Garrett can fit into the defense that is already well-established.
There is plenty of excitement regarding the addition of Myles Garrett. While his arrival points to a huge elevation for the Los Angeles Rams, there are some finer details that could get in the way of his production.
Garrett played in a 4-3 base defense and will now be playing in a 3-4 with Los Angeles. While switching to a new base may not be all that complicated, there are other plays on the defensive line and more to think about, and defensive coordinator Chris Shula broke down a bit on how he plans to fit everything together.
"We're still gonna have our principles. We're gonna let him do what he does best. We all know what he does best ... we're gonna work with him and put him in the best spots that we think for him and the defense to succeed," Shula said.
Shula compared Garrett to Michael Jordan or LeBron James, indicating that their respective teams would not put them out of position in a way that would dim their ability to play at a high level. Shula and the Rams' defense plan to do just that with the reigning Defensive Player of the Year.
Shula also indicated that trades can often be spoken about but not fully go through. With Garrett in the building, he plans to do a "deep dive" on his tape to see how to maximize his abilities.
"Now that it's obviously official, we will do a deep dive into everything. Things he does well, things that we think from our defense that can fit his game. Maybe something that he has done well that we can add to it ... we are going to be coaching the guys here, too, so it's a tricky situation," Shula said.
Shula is alluding to the fact that the defense is already packed with Braden Fiske, Poona Ford, Byron Young, and Kobie Turner. All of the linemen and edge rushers played well through 2025 and now must make room for Garrett.
Though the simple answer Shula could give would be that Garrett is just set to be unleashed to win his pass rush assignments, there are many factors that go into scheming a defense and finding fits for every player.
Nobody can argue that Garrett will elevate this Rams defense in a major way. It is just that Shula and the coaching staff must now determine how they can place the DPOTY into a winning situation.
Either way, Garrett landing with Los Angeles was a trade nobody quite saw coming, but it places the team into the top spot of being Super Bowl favorites. Still, a lot has to go right for the Rams to end up not only winning the NFC crown, but also the big game.
