The Los Angeles Rams need a new offensive coordinator, and head coach Sean McVay detailed the plan to find that new coach.
With Mike LaFleur taking the head coach position with the Arizona Cardinals, the Los Angeles Rams are now without an offensive coordinator. Even more so, they are now without one of the best offensive minds in the league.
There are plenty of names the Rams can choose to explore, and head coach Sean McVay broke down the plan to find a new leader on offense.
McVay spoke about the plan during his end-of-season presser. He praised LaFleur for getting the opportunity, and also expressed his excitement for being able to "see him twice a year" now that he is the coach of the Cardinals.
That said, McVay indicated the team would go on an "exhaustive search" for their new offensive coordinator, which will employ in-house candidates on top of outside candidates as well.
"I did think that this was something that could occur, so we've got great candidates in-house," McVay said. "Based on the rules and I think what is the appropriate thing, are you going to do an extensive search to really just dive into what's going to be the best way to bring in new people that help us continue to build and grow towards where we want to go?"
Being the offensive coordinator for the Rams is an important job for the simple fact that this person needs to command the respect of players like Matthew Stafford, Davante Adams, and more.
This is assuming Stafford will return in 2026, which remains up in the air.
Still, the offense for the Rams has hummed under LaFleur, and the new offensive coordinator will have the responsibility to handle that level of talent while keeping that side of the ball as solid as it has been.
The benefit of being the offensive coordinator is being able to command an offense with those upper-echelon players. Those include the listed game-changes, and players like wide receiver Puka Nacua, running back Kyren Williams, and so many more.
An issue to consider is the Rams being behind the curve on coordinators, as the Cardinals were one of the last teams to finalize their new head coach. With LaFleur exiting way past other coordinators who were promoted, those teams have been busy bringing in quality coaches.
That is not to say the Rams will miss out on a top coach, but they have missed out on strong candidates already.
Expect the Rams and McVay to get busy with interviews in the coming days and weeks, to solidify the new offensive leader before free agency begins.
