Los Angeles Rams defensive end Myles Garrett went viral for working on his tackling with a rugby coach, and now he has detailed the reason behind it.
It is no surprise that Los Angeles Rams defensive end Myles Garrett can instantly go viral for his immense size, speed, and frame when it comes to workout videos. However, a video showcasing him working his tackling ability made its way around the internet.
In the video, Garrett is seen hitting his trainer, who was later revealed to be Australian rugby coach Billy Coffey.
Garrett is arguably one of the hardest hitters in the NFL, and he set the record for sacks in a single season with 23 in 2025. Now, as he looks to take his tackling prowess to a new level in his first year with the Rams, he has incorporated the help of a rugby coach.
When Garrett was asked about the video and what his goals were, he simply stated he is just attempting to refine his own skills.
"Just try to continue to improve however you can," Garrett said. "Not relying just on a practice out here to polish your skills. Being able to help improve my tackling, the force of it or getting the ball out. There were some other things we worked on that are even more applicable to my game and pass rush. I think if it will help, it will be beneficial."
Garrett being able to increase the force of his hits in a way to get the ball out would be hugely beneficial to himself as well as the Rams defense in general.
Los Angeles boasts a defensive unit that includes defensive tackles Kobie Turner, Braden Fiske, and Poona Ford, along with fellow defensive ends Garrett and Aaron Donald. However, Donald's 2026 debut will have to wait, as he was ruled out for Week 1.
Additionally, the Rams also have All-Pro safety Quentin Lake, cornerbacks Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson, linebacker Nate Landman, and many more.
Considering the level of talent on that side of the ball, Garrett made mention of his injury, and not being worried about whether he lost a step due to the knee ailment that has kept him out of practice.
"I think I'll be able to play off of some great teammates. We have a strong defense all around. They'll make it easy. Even if I'm a touch off of what I usually am. I don't suspect I will be, but I have plenty of support. That's all I'm saying," Garrett said.
Garrett understands that the names listed above are more than enough to help him out should his knee somehow limit him in any way.
Since Garrett arrived in early June via a blockbuster trade with the Cleveland Browns, he has been dealing with a knee injury that led to some soreness and swelling.
This injury was initially downplayed by Garrett, as he stated that he is allowed to be old and banged up. However, he missed multiple practices throughout training camp as a result.
The Rams defender returned on Sunday and practiced consecutively to prepare for the trip to Australia and to face the San Francisco 49ers. Head coach Sean McVay also confirmed he was "ready to go."
How much of an impact Garrett will have on this defense remains to be seen, but the 49ers will surely have to account for him, which could open more opportunities for the other strong pass rushers.
